De André canta De André - Cristiano De André Live ["DeA sings DeA"] is a 2017 live tribute album by Cristiano De André, consisting of remakes of songs co-written and originally recorded by his late father Fabrizio De André. A follow-up to his 2009-2010 same-titled releases, it features an eclectic selection of songs (both hits and lesser-known tracks) from throughout Fabrizio's career. It was recorded during Cristiano's 2017 tour of Italian theaters - his second tribute tour to his father and, as of 2019, his last such tour. The album is notable for including the first officially released live performances (by anybody) of "Canzone del maggio" and "Il bombarolo" - both from De André Senior's 1973 concept album Storia di un impiegato - since he performed the album in its entirety during his 1975-'76 tour of Italy, his first one; after that tour, the album's content disappeared completely from Fabrizio's live setlists, except for the sentimental ballad "Verranno a chiederti del nostro amore" - arguably the best-known song from that album.

Unlike the preceding volumes, De André canta De André Vol. 3 was released as a single CD in a cardboard Digipak box.

Overview and songs

All songs on the album were re-arranged in a rock style, similarly to the 2009-2010 releases, by Cristiano De André and keyboardist/programmer Massimo "Max" Marcolini (except for "La guerra di Piero", arranged by guitarist Osvaldo Di Dio), in order to fit better with Cristiano's current sensitivity; indeed, Di Dio's electric guitar is prominently featured throughout the album. However, due to the replacement in De André Junior's backing band of keyboardist Luciano Luisi and bassist Davide Pezzin respectively with Marcolini and jazz/rock bassist Massimo Ciaccio (both Luisi and Marcolini being early collaborators of Zucchero Fornaciari's), the overall sound is mellower, softer and less harsh than the hard rock and progressive rock arrangements featured on the previous releases, and it has instead more of a pop rock/power rock feel to it.

The most notable changes from Fabrizio De André's original studio recordings to Cristiano's 2017 live remakes are the following:

  • "Canzone del maggio" is performed solo by Cristiano accompanying himself on acoustic guitar and is shorter than the original.
  • ""Sinàn Capudàn Pascià" is delivered in a slightly more serious tone than Fabrizio De André's original performance on Crêuza de mä and features prominent drums with very little percussion, if at all. The various ethnic instruments played by Mauro Pagani on the original album are also not featured, and replaced by guitars and synths.
  • "Khorakhané" was transposed from its original {{music|time|3|4}} time signature to {{music|time|6|8}}, to allow the insertion of a new drum part by drummer Davide De Vito; the operatic ending sung by Dori Ghezzi on the original album is omitted.
  • On "Dolcenera", the accordion part is performed by Marcolini on a synth, and, on the main solos, it is overlaid with a twang guitar part performed by Di Dio and mixed lower than the guitar. The Paraguayan harp part, performed by Cecilia Chailly on the original recording, is also played on a synth. No clarinet is featured.
  • "Una storia sbagliata" dispenses with the original recording's impassioned folk feel, opting for a much harder rock feel. Here and on the following track "Coda di Lupo", Di Dio's guitar is distorted and more prominent than elsewhere. Unlike his father harmonizing with co-writer Massimo Bubola on the original single, Cristiano sings the entire vocal by himself, with no harmonies.
  • "Coda di Lupo", same as the previous track, is faster and louder than the folk-flavored original on Rimini. It features Di Dio's only distorted guitar solo on the whole album.
  • The arrangements for "Il testamento di Tito" and "Volta la carta" are nearly identical to the ones realized by Premiata Forneria Marconi (PFM) for their influential 1979-1980 live tour with Fabrizio De André; however, both songs are sonically updated to a more contemporary feel.
  • "Canzone per l'estate" is given a pop rock treatment, with a four-on-the-floor bass drum within a generally very prominent drum part, a 12-string guitar (played by Cristiano De André), synths and a vaguely U2-sounding guitar part by Di Dio, who uses delay and chorus effects.
  • On "Il bombarolo", Cristiano once again eschews the folk nature of his father's original recording, this time by adopting a country approach. Di Dio plays twang guitar for the second time.
  • "Amore che vieni, amore che vai" is slightly slower than Fabrizio De André's 1966 recording, and features a simplified instrumentation consisting of piano, bass, synthesized strings, sparse drums and a soft electric guitar with a reverb effect. The interlude melody, originally played on a flugelhorn, is played here by Di Dio on guitar.
  • "La guerra di Piero", arranged by Di Dio, features the most drastic change from De Andrè Senior's original: his slow {{music|time|2|4}}) military march rendition is transformed into a very sweet, very soft ballad in {{music|time|6|8}} with no drums, no bass and no acoustic guitars, featuring instead a synth pad in the background (with recurring low notes, to underline the dramatic subject matter of the lyrics) and a distant electric guitar arpeggio. On this song, Cristiano does not play at all and just provides a simple, subdued solo vocal.
