The song was first published in 1916 by G. Ricordi & Co. in New York, NY.[1][2] Irish tenor John McCormack earned the nickname the "Singing Prophet of Victory" by popularizing this wartime song.[3] It was in the top 20 from January to March 1919 and reached number 10 in February.[4] The idea for the song, according to an editorial note on the sheet music, was conceived by Rice while on sentry duty at the front lines at Ypres, France.[5] References1. ^{{cite book |last1=Vogel |first1=Frederick G. |date=1995 |title=World War I Songs: A History and Dictionary of Popular American Patriotic Tunes, with Over 300 Complete Lyrics |location=Jefferson |publisher=McFarland & Company, Inc. |page=165 |isbn=0-89950-952-5 |OCLC= 32241433}} Bibliography2. ^{{cite book |last=Parker |first=Bernard S. |year=2007 |title=World War I Sheet Music 1. |location=Jefferson |publisher=McFarland & Company, Inc. |page=93 |isbn=978-0-7864-2798-7 |oclc=71790113}} 3. ^{{cite book |last1=Vogel |first1=Frederick G. |date=1995 |title=World War I Songs: A History and Dictionary of Popular American Patriotic Tunes, with Over 300 Complete Lyrics |location=Jefferson |publisher=McFarland & Company, Inc. |page=82 |isbn=0-89950-952-5 |OCLC= 32241433}} 4. ^{{cite book |last=Paas |first=John Roger |year=2014 |title=America sings of war: American sheet music from World War I. |page=269 |isbn=9783447102780 |oclc=892462420}}. 5. ^Hayes, Florence."Dear Old Pal of Mine" The Canadian Encyclopedia.
