The Clinton River enters Deer Lake on the north end just after it passes under I-75. It exits on the south end where it enters into Middle Lake (23 acres), then into tiny Dollar Lake and then, as it crosses under Dixie Highway, into Greens Lake.[4] Deer Lake connects on its northeast side to 5-acre Dark Lake.[5] DepotIn 1851, the Detroit, Grand Haven and Milwaukee Railway came through Independence Township and a train depot was built in Clarkston. The Clarkston depot was 35.23 miles from Detroit and 153.08 miles from Grand Haven, Michigan. The railroad helped make the lakes of the area, including Deer Lake, easily accessible to summer vacationers from the big cities.[6][7] The Clarkston depot,[8] along with the Waterford depot,[9] the Drayton Plains depot[10] and the Windiate depot[11] served to make Independence Township and Waterford Township a resort area. The original depot at Clarkston, built in 1851, burned down around 1890. A "witch's hat" depot was then built to replace it, but it burned down in 1923. A third depot was built to replace it and ceased operation in 1959. Since 1962, the depot has been used as a theater by the Clarkston Village Players, a local community theatre organization.[12] ResortThe Deer Lake Inn Hotel was a summer resort for vacationers from Detroit and Lansing. The resort was easily accessed by four trains a day during the summer months from the 1890s to the 1940s and was located on Deer Lake near the Clarkston depot. It featured boating, fishing, sailing, sunbathing and tennis.[13] Public accessDeer Lake has a public beach for township residents on the south shore off of White Lake Road in Clarkston. There is also a boat launch at the beach.[14] FishFish in Deer Lake include pumpkinseed sunfish, largemouth bass, walleye, northern pike and crappie.[15] References1. ^{{cite web|url=http://mapcarta.com/22326844|title=Deer Lake|website=Mapcarta}} {{gnis|624471}}2. ^{{cite web|author=Russ Ravary248-310-6239Keller Williams Realty |url=http://www.michiganlakerealestatehomes.com/Deer-Lake-Clarkston-Michigan |title=Russ Ravary with Russ Ravary: Deer Lake Oakland County Michigan |publisher=Michiganlakerealestatehomes.com |date= |accessdate=2016-06-12}} 3. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.lakeplace.com/lakefinder/mi/oakland/greens/63-1749 |title=Greens Lake - Oakland County Michigan |publisher=LakePlace.com |date= |accessdate=2016-06-12}} 4. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.dnr.state.mi.us/SPATIALDATALIBRARY/PDF_MAPS/INLAND_LAKE_MAPS/OAKLAND/DEER_LAKE.PDF |title=Map |website=www.dnr.state.mi.us |format=PDF}} 5. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.google.com/maps/place/Dark+Lake+Dr,+Village+of+Clarkston,+MI+48346/@42.7425614,-83.4360483,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x882499ef8c287103:0xb6189e6a0bcae4e9!8m2!3d42.7425614!4d-83.4338596|title=Dark Lake Dr|website=Dark Lake Dr}} 6. ^{{cite web|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=_GI0AQAAMAAJ|title=History of Oakland County, Michigan: A Narrative Account of Its Historical Progress, Its People, and Its Principal Interests|first=Thaddeus De Witt|last=Seeley|date=1 January 1912|publisher=Lewis Publishing Company|via=Google Books}} 7. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/119054413/|title=Detroit Free Press from Detroit, Michigan on July 3, 1898 · Page 11|publisher=}} 8. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.michiganrailroads.com/RRHX/Stations/CountyStations/OaklandStations/ClarkstonMI.htm|title=Station: Clarkston, MI|website=Michiganrailroad.com|accessdate=2016-06-29|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170510100520/http://www.michiganrailroads.com/RRHX/Stations/CountyStations/OaklandStations/ClarkstonMI.htm#|archive-date=2017-05-10|dead-url=yes|df=}} 9. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.michiganrailroads.com/RRHX/Stations/CountyStations/OaklandStations/WaterfordMI.htm|title=Station: Waterford, MI|website=Michiganrailroad.com|accessdate=2016-06-29|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170510100647/http://www.michiganrailroads.com/RRHX/Stations/CountyStations/OaklandStations/WaterfordMI.htm#|archive-date=2017-05-10|dead-url=yes|df=}} 10. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.michiganrailroads.com/RRHX/Stations/CountyStations/OaklandStations/DraytonPlainsMI.htm|title=Station: Drayton Plains, MI|website=Michiganrailroad.com|accessdate=2016-06-29|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160713184617/http://michiganrailroads.com/RRHX/Stations/CountyStations/OaklandStations/DraytonPlainsMI.htm#|archive-date=2016-07-13|dead-url=yes|df=}} 11. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.michiganrailroads.com/RRHX/Stations/CountyStations/OaklandStations/ClarkstonMI.htm|title=Station: Clarkston, MI|website=Michiganrailroad.com|accessdate=2016-06-29|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170510100520/http://www.michiganrailroads.com/RRHX/Stations/CountyStations/OaklandStations/ClarkstonMI.htm#|archive-date=2017-05-10|dead-url=yes|df=}} 12. ^{{Cite web |url=http://www.clarkstonvillageplayers.org/about/about.asp?a=history# |title=Archived copy |access-date=2016-07-25 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160920051318/http://www.clarkstonvillageplayers.org/about/about.asp?a=history# |archive-date=2016-09-20 |dead-url=yes |df= }} 13. ^{{cite web|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=ahPiAAAAMAAJ|title=History of Oakland County Michigan: A Narrative Account of Its Historic Progress, Its People, Its Principal Interests|date=1 January 1912|publisher=Lewis Publishing Company|via=Google Books}} 14. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.indetwp.com/departments/parks_rec_and_seniors/parks_and_facilities.php#deerlake |title=Parks and Facilities |publisher=Indetwp.com |date=1998-07-21 |accessdate=2016-06-12}} 15. ^ {{dead link|date=August 2018}} 3 : Lakes of Oakland County, Michigan|Lakes of Michigan|Lakes of Independence Township, Michigan |
