Formation and enlargementsThe alliance was launched on 30 August 2015, prior to the September snap election formed by the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) and the Democratic Left (DIMAR).[1][2][3] Citizens' Movements for Social Democracy joined the Democratic Alignment as well. On 20 January 2019, DIMAR left the Democratic Alignment.[4] Member parties
In the September 2015 legislative election on 20 September 2015, the alliance received 6.3% of the vote, providing the mandate for 17 seats in the Hellenic Parliament.[5] In January 2017 Movement of Democratic Socialists joined Democratic Alignment.[6] Οn 13 January 2017, MPs Leonidas Grigorakos and Ilchan Achmet joined the Democratic Alignment. On 16–18 March 2018, DISI and other Greek centre-left parties merged into Movement for Change.[7][8] On 20 January 2019, DIMAR left the Democratic Alignment, after the party was expelled from the alliance due to its support for the Prespa agreement.[9] Election resultsHellenic Parliament
NameThe name Democratic Alignment has been previously used by a 1950/51 centre-left coalition.[10] It was proposed in 2014 by Evangelos Venizelos as a new name for PASOK, but was rejected by former prime minister George Papandreou.[11] See also
