Derek attended Byram Hills High School in Armonk, New York where he began to sing and act. Music careerDerek studied at the University of Delaware where he began playing guitar and songwriting at age 20.[3] After Derek graduated, his college band Omnisoul (later renamed The Crash Motive) signed a record deal with Wind-up Records. Waiting (Save Your Life) by The Crash Motive written by Fuhrmann, featured on the Fantastic Four Soundtrack.[4] as well as being featured on the CBS TV Show Joan of Arcadia[5] In 2011, Fuhrmann signed a publishing deal Gregg Wattenberg of Arcade Songs and co-wrote three songs for O.A.R.’s 7th studio album, King including the single, Heaven.[6] Fuhrmann received critical acclaim for writing American Idol winner, Phillip Phillips’ second single, Gone, Gone, Gone in 2012. The single sold over 2 Million copies,[7] and reached number one at Triple A and AC radio, as well as number two at Hot AC. The song was number one in a total of eight Billboard charts.[8] The single earned Fuhrmann an ASCAP Pop Award alongside co-writers Todd Clark and Gregg Wattenberg for the most performed song of the year.[9][10] Fuhrmann produced independent artist Joel Adams’ first single “Please Don’t Go”. The song was a global success charting in fifteen countries. As of August 2018, the official music video has received over 64 Million views, and the single has been played over 372 Million on Spotify.[11] Fuhrmann produced seven songs on Zombies on Broadway the second studio album by Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness, and also wrote Fire Escape the first single from the album. The single reached number 4 at US Alt Radio.[12] Fuhrmann co-wrote Raging (featuring Kodaline) the fifth single from Kygo’s debut studio album Cloud Nine. The single was certified Gold in the United States (RIAA).[13][14] and Canada (Music Canada),[15] Silver in the United Kingdom[16] and reached the Top 10 in Sweden, Norway, Hungary, Ireland and the Czech Republic. In 2017, Fuhrmann wrote and produced So Much More Than This performed by then 13 year old, America's Got Talent winner, Grace Vanderwaal.
