"Die for You" is a song by Canadian singer The Weeknd, from his third studio album Starboy (2016). The song was written by him, Doc McKinney, Prince 85, Dylan Wiggins, Magnus Høiberg and William Thomas Walsh, and produced by the singer alongside McKinney, Cirkut, Cashmere Cat and Prince 85. It was one of the tracks of Starboy to be featured in the short film Mania.[1][2] It received early airplay from urban and urban AC radio in August 2017[3] then was sent to rhythmic contemporary radio on September 19, 2017 as the album's fifth single in the United States.[4][5]

Music and composition

The song is written in the key of C# minor with a tempo of 67 beats per minute.

Commercial performance

"Die for You" peaked at number 43 on the Billboard Hot 100. It reached the Top ten on the R&B Songs chart and the Top 20 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. The song also charted and peaked at number 35 on the Canadian Hot 100, reaching the Top 40.[6]

Rumors and speculation

The song is speculated to be written about Tesfaye's then ex-girlfriend, model Bella Hadid due to rumors that arose that the two ended their relationship near the release of the album. In an interview on Beats 1 Radio with Zane Lowe, Tesfaye admitted that the song was finished a mere week before the release of Starboy and that it was his hardest song to finish off the record due to its lyrical content, which further added to the speculation.[7][8]

Use in media

The song was featured in the second season of the popular HBO series Insecure.[9][10] It soon ended up topping the THR's Top TV Songs Chart in August 2017 because of its appearance on the show.[11]
