It has three to five linear leaves at its base and up to four bright yellow flowers with a reddish brown border around the labellum callus. It is found along the south coast and is one of the last Diuris to flower in Western Australia. DescriptionDiuris heberlei is a tuberous, perennial herb with between three and five linear leaves at its base, each leaf {{convert|100-150|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|2-3|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide. Up to five bright yellow flowers {{convert|30-35|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} wide are borne on a flowering stem {{convert|200-500|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} tall. The dorsal sepal is more or less erect, narrow egg-shaped with a tapered tip, {{convert|12-16|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|7-9|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide. The lateral sepals are linear to sword-shaped, greenish brown, {{convert|18-24|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long, {{convert|4-5|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} wide, turned downwards and parallel to each other. The petals are more or less erect or turned backwards, spread apart from each other, {{convert|11-16|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|8-11|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide on a brownish or blackish stalk {{convert|6-8|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long. The labellum is {{convert|12-18|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and has three lobes. The centre lobe is broadly egg-shaped, {{convert|10-13|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide with a low ridge with brown markings near its base. The side lobes are egg-shaped, {{convert|6-10|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|4-7|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide. There are two ridge-like calli about {{convert|8|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long near the mid-line of the base of the labellum and bordered with reddish brown. Flowering occurs between late December and February.[2][3][4][5]Taxonomy and namingDiuris heberlei was first formally described in 1991 by David Jones from a specimen collected near Nannarup, east of Albany, and the description was published in Australian Orchid Review.[6] The specific epithet (heberlei), honours Ron Heberle, orchidologist and discoverer of this species .[3][4]Distribution and habitatHeberle's donkey orchid grows in winter-wet areas between sand dunes between Albany and Augusta in the Jarrah Forest and Warren biogeographic regions.[4][5][7] ConservationDiuris heberlei is classified as "Priority Two" by the Western Australian Government Department of Parks and Wildlife[7] meaning that it is poorly known and from only one or a few locations.[8]References1. ^{{WCSP | 63408 | Diuris heberlei}} {{Taxonbar|from=Q10267394}}2. ^1 {{cite book|last1=Jones|first1=David L.|title=A complete guide to native orchids of Australia including the island territories|date=2006|publisher=New Holland|location=Frenchs Forest, N.S.W.|isbn=1877069124|pages =122–123}} 3. ^1 {{cite journal|last1=Jones|first1=David L.|title=New taxa of Australian Orchidaceae|journal=Australian Orchid Research|date=1991|volume=2|pages=56–57}} 4. ^1 2 {{cite book|last1=Brown|first1=Andrew|last2=Dixon|first2=Kingsley|last3=French|first3=Christopher|last4=Brockman|first4=Garry|title=Field guide to the orchids of Western Australia : the definitive guide to the native orchids of Western Australia|date=2013|publisher=Simon Nevill Publications|isbn=9780980348149|page=225}} 5. ^1 {{cite book|last1=Hoffman|first1=Noel|last2=Brown|first2=Andrew|title=Orchids of South-West Australia.|date=2011|publisher=Noel Hoffman|location=Gooseberry Hill|isbn=9780646562322|page=491|edition=3rd}} 6. ^{{cite web|title=Duiris heberlei|url= https://id.biodiversity.org.au/instance/apni/551652|publisher=APNI|accessdate=23 March 2018}} 7. ^1 {{FloraBase|name=Diuris heberlei |id=12940}} 8. ^{{cite web|title=Conservation codes for Western Australian Flora and Fauna|url=http://www.dpaw.wa.gov.au/images/documents/plants-animals/threatened-species/Listings/conservation_code_definitions.pdf|publisher=Government of Western Australia Department of Parks and Wildlife|accessdate=23 March 2018}} 5 : Diuris|Endemic orchids of Australia|Orchids of Western Australia|Endemic flora of Western Australia|Plants described in 1991 |
