It usually has two leaves at its base and up to nine relatively small, whitish to mauve flowers with purple markings. It is an uncommon species found in northern New South Wales and southern Queensland. DescriptionDiuris parvipetala is a tuberous, perennial herb with two linear leaves {{convert|200-300|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long, {{convert|3-4|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide and folded lengthwise. Up to nine whitish to mauve flowers with purple markings and {{convert|17-22|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide are borne on a flowering stem {{convert|200-450|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} tall. The dorsal sepal is angled upwards, {{convert|6-8|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and about {{convert|5|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide. The lateral sepals are {{convert|30-45|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long, about {{convert|1|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide and turned downwards. The petals are oblong, {{convert|3-4|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long, {{convert|1-2|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide and spread apart from each other on a purple-brown stalk {{convert|6-8.5|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long. The labellum is {{convert|5-6.5|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and has three lobes. The centre lobe is spade-shaped, about {{convert|5|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|4-5|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} wide with its tip turned downwards. The side lobes are about {{convert|2|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|1|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide. There are between two thick, ridge-like calli {{convert|3-4|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long in the mid-line of the labellum. Flowering occurs from August to October.[2][3]Taxonomy and namingThe slender purple donkey orchid was first formally described in 1964 by Alick Dockrill who gave it the name Diuris punctata var. parvipetala.
