It usually has two leaves at its base and up to nine relatively small, whitish to mauve flowers with purple markings. It is an uncommon species found in northern New South Wales and southern Queensland. DescriptionDiuris parvipetala is a tuberous, perennial herb with two linear leaves {{convert|200-300|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long, {{convert|3-4|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide and folded lengthwise. Up to nine whitish to mauve flowers with purple markings and {{convert|17-22|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide are borne on a flowering stem {{convert|200-450|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} tall. The dorsal sepal is angled upwards, {{convert|6-8|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and about {{convert|5|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide. The lateral sepals are {{convert|30-45|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long, about {{convert|1|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide and turned downwards. The petals are oblong, {{convert|3-4|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long, {{convert|1-2|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide and spread apart from each other on a purple-brown stalk {{convert|6-8.5|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long. The labellum is {{convert|5-6.5|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and has three lobes. The centre lobe is spade-shaped, about {{convert|5|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|4-5|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} wide with its tip turned downwards. The side lobes are about {{convert|2|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|1|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide. There are between two thick, ridge-like calli {{convert|3-4|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long in the mid-line of the labellum. Flowering occurs from August to October.[2][3]Taxonomy and namingThe slender purple donkey orchid was first formally described in 1964 by Alick Dockrill who gave it the name Diuris punctata var. parvipetala. The description was published in The Victorian Naturalist from a specimen collected near Brigooda.[4][5] In 1987 David Jones and Mark Clements raised it to species status as Diuris parvipetalum.[6] The specific epithet (parvipetala) is derived from the Latin words parvus meaning "small"[7]{{rp|590}} and petalum meaning "leaf".[7]{{rp|616}} Distribution and habitatDiuris parvipetala grows with grasses and between rocks from about Mount Moffatt in Queensland to Emmaville in New South Wales.[2]ConservationDiuris ochroma is classed as "vulnerable" under the Queensland Government Nature Conservation Act 1992.[3]References1. ^{{WCSP | 63433 | Diuris parvipetala}} {{Taxonbar|from=Q10267409}}2. ^1 2 {{cite book|last1=Jones|first1=David L.|title=A complete guide to native orchids of Australia including the island territories|date=2006|publisher=New Holland|location=Frenchs Forest, N.S.W.|isbn=1877069124|pages=132–133}} 3. ^1 {{cite web|last1=Bostock|first1=Peter|last2=Mayhew|first2=Melissa|title=Diuris parvipetala|url=https://wetlandinfo.ehp.qld.gov.au/wetlands/ecology/components/species/?diuris-parvipetala|publisher=Queensland Government Department of Environment and Science|accessdate=29 March 2018}} 4. ^{{cite web|title=Duiris parvipetala|url= https://id.biodiversity.org.au/instance/apni/520890|publisher=APNI|accessdate=29 March 2018}} 5. ^{{cite journal|last1=Dockrill|first1=Alick W.|title=The Eastern Australian orchid Diuris punctata|journal=The Victorian Naturalist|date=1964|volume=81|pages=137–138|url=https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/127188#page/130/mode/1up|accessdate=29 March 2018}} 6. ^{{cite web|title=Duiris parvipetala|url= https://id.biodiversity.org.au/instance/apni/520215|publisher=APNI|accessdate=29 March 2018}} 7. ^1 {{cite book|last1=Brown|first1=Roland Wilbur|title=The Composition of Scientific Words|date=1956|publisher=Smithsonian Institution Press|location=Washington, D.C.}} 5 : Diuris|Endemic orchids of Australia|Orchids of New South Wales|Orchids of Queensland|Plants described in 1964 |
