It is located in Dobrich, Bulgaria. It houses over 100 animals from 40 species. The zoo is founded under a Bulgarian-Swiss project in 2003. It has a land area of 16 hectares, 50-year-old vegetation and a convenient access. The zoo is opened from 9:00 to 19:00 (from April to September) and from 10:00 to 16:00 (October to March). Every Monday is a day off. History and AnimalsIn 1996 Reuters published a photo of a little kangaroo and his mother in their cage in the now closed Dobrich zoo. The publication described the miserable conditions animals were living in. Barbara Gehring, a Swiss ecologist saw the photo and decided to help. She organised charity events and this led to the formation of a Bulgarian-Swiss project which created a new Dobrich zoo in 2003. There are animals from 40 different species living in the zoo. This includes roe deer, red deer, kangaroo, raccoon, llama, alpaca, mouflon, european bison, Przewalski's horse, two brown bears named Berna and Kostadin, etc. Among the most interesting inhabitants in the center is the family of Przewalski's horses. They are very short – about 130 cm and have a very thick yellow-gray mane, very shaggy tail, massive head, dark mane and legs. There are also many species of birds: eurasian eagle-owl, golden pheasant, peacock, mute swan, rosy pelican, white stork, many fowl species, etc. The zoo has several ponds. In one of them lives one species of turtle - the Red-eared slider. There is also a bug hotel (insect hotel).
