Lewis and Joe Young (lyricist), and the music was written by Walter Donaldson. The song was published by Waterson, Berlin & Snyder Company in New York City.[1][2] "Don't Cry Frenchy, Don't Cry" depicts a soldier returning home from France, but sadly leaving his war romance behind. He assures her in the chorus, "We'll hear wedding bells chime. Oh! please don't cry, Frenchy, don't cry."[3] The original sheet music cover depicts a woman crying. In another edition of sheet music the title was changed to "Don't Cry Frenchy," and the sheet music cover shows a woman waving at a ship.[2] The song attracted the international public, who wanted to believe in its hopeful message that "peaceful stars" will soon begin to "heal the scars of Flanders."[3] Don't Cry, Frenchy was 19th in the top 20 charts in May and June 1919 and was recorded by both Lewis James and Charles Hart & Elliot Shaw.[4] The sheet music can be found at the Pritzker Military Museum & Library.[5] References1. ^{{cite book |last=Vogel |first=Frederick G. |date=1995 |title=World War I Songs: A History and Dictionary of Popular American Patriotic Tunes, with over 300 Complete Lyrics |location=Jefferson |publisher=McFarland and Company, Inc. |page=167 |isbn=0-89950-952-5 }} 2. ^1 {{cite book |last=Parker |first=Bernard |date=2007 |title=World War I Sheet Music |volume=1 |location=Jefferson |publisher=McFarland & Company, Inc. |isbn=978-0-7864-2798-7 }} 3. ^1 {{cite book |last=Vogel |first=Frederick G. |date=1995 |title=World War I Songs: A History and Dictionary of Popular American Patriotic Tunes, with over 300 Complete Lyrics |location=Jefferson |publisher=McFarland and Company, Inc. |page=307 |isbn=0-89950-952-5 }} 4. ^{{cite book |last=Paas |first=John Roger |year=2014 |title=America sings of war: American sheet music from World War I. |page=269 |isbn=9783447102780 |oclc=892462420}}. 5. ^Lewis, Sam M., Joe Young, and Walter Donaldson. 1919.
