1st NZ Ranger Company was raised on 5th October 1987 following a Defence White Paper that called for greater self reliance by NZ Defence Forces. At this time the New Zealand Special Air Service was preparing to provide high level security for the Commonwealth Games, scheduled to be haled in Auckland, New Zealand in 1990. 1st NZ Ranger Coy was tasked with preparing to cover 'Green Role" tasks which would allow the counter terrorist elements of 1st NZSAS to concentrate on their security role in the upcoming games.

The name 'Rangers' was chosen s a reference to Gustavus von Tempsky (1828-1868) who raised a fighting unit during the New Zealand Wars known as 'von Tempsky's Bush Rangers'.[1][2]

The first Office Commanding was (then) Captain Dave Gawn, RNZIR[3]. The first Company Sergeant Major was Ross James, RNZIR. Applications were called for from within the Army.

In early 1988 selection and training commenced. Known as 'Basic ranger course', the purpose was to 'identify volunteers suitable for service with 1 Ranger Coy and to develop those individuals in the basic skills required to allow them to take their place within the unit'. All directing staff were drawn from the NZ SAS.

There were three parts:

  • Part A-Selection, 8th to 20th June 1988
  • Part B-Amphibious and Cliff Assault, 4th to 31st July 1988
  • Part C- Parachute Training, 1st to 31st August 1988

Part A-Selection. Although based on the SAS selection course it was designed to be less stringent. It tested candidates in standardized tactics and skills, use of weapons and esprit de corp. Not all of the 40 odd candidates were selected to continue to the training cycle contained in parts B & C.

Part B-Amphibious and Cliff Assault. This phase trained candidates in procedures of basic cliff climbing, amphibious operations and helicopter rapelling.

Part C- Parachute Training. To ensure all candidates were competent in approved techniques of parachuting to a standard suitable for Ranger Operations.

Throughout the Basic Ranger Course, candidates were assessed by Directing Staff in the skills of weapon handling, field craft, navigation and physical fitness. Candidates were expected to show good judgement, assimilation of tactics, physical endurance, honesty/integrity, maturity, reaction under stress and participation.

At the conclusion of parts B&C, 27 soldiers were selected to serve in 1st NZ Ranger Company. NZSAS had recently adopted the sand coloured 'ecru' beret worn by the British SAS. Soldiers within Ranger Company were 'capped' with the maroon beret, associated with airborne units. They continued to were the unit badges associated with their original units; e.g. Infantry, Artillery, Engineers.

In early 1989, a second platoon was raised in similar fashion. Of 47 candidates, 18(?) were selected to serve in the company.

Following defence budget cuts, 1st Ranger company was disbanded. Soldiers returned to their original units, a few went on to serve within the NZ SAS.

In 2001(?), the idea of 'Rangers' was raised again. Although it would never aging be a stand alone unit, 'Rangers' would be drown from within the Army, developed in insertion skills and return to their units to be call upon if required.[4][5]
