Jonathan Conricus, the F-16 was hit during the mission.[4][6] The plane finally had crashed in Jezreel Valley in the north of Israel.[4] One of the pilots suffered severe injuries and was unconscious when he arrived at the hospital, while the other one suffered only slight injuries.[4][5] Dr. Rafi Beyar, the head of Haifa’s Rambam Medical Center, said the seriously injured pilot's conditions were stable, but was unconscious and connected to a respirator.[4][5] After the incident, Israeli president Reuven Rivlin spoke with the second pilot who slightly injured.[4][5] AftermathTom Bateman, the BBC's Middle East correspondent, says that the Israeli attack on Syria was not unusual, but the loss of an Israeli fighter jet marks a serious escalation.[6]Interfax news agency reported that Russian president Vladimir Putin told Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a phone call that Israel should avoid any steps that would lead to a new confrontation in the region.[2]Israeli military spokesperson Jonathan Conricus said that Iran was responsible for this incident and that the IDF would prepare for further action.[3] A Syrian Armed Forces official said on Syrian state TV that Syrian air defenses hit more than one Israeli plane and called it "new Israeli aggression."[3] Later, Syria state TV claimed that the Syrian Air Defense Force had responded to new Israeli raids near the Damascus.[3] A Pentagon spokesperson said that the United States fully supports Israel’s right to defend itself.[2] A U.N. spokesperson said that U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was closely watching all military escalation throughout Syria and invites all sides to exercise restraint.[2] Brig. Gen. Tomer Bar, the second-in-command of the Israeli Air Force, said the Israeli planes would face a variety of Syrian anti-aircraft weapons.
