}}The 54th Security Force Assistance Brigade (SFAB) is a Security force assistance brigade of the United States Army. It is one of 6 SFABs currently planned by the US Army, but the only one manned by the National Guard [2]. 54th SFAB is still pending its official activation ceremony.[2]

Security Force Assistance Brigades

SFABs are brigades whose mission is to train, advise, and assist (TAA) the armed forces of other states. Operationally, a 800-soldier SFAB would free-up a 4500-soldier BCT from a TAA mission.

On 23 June 2016 General Mark Milley revealed plans for train/advise/assist Brigades, consisting of seasoned officers and NCOs with a full chain of command, but no junior Soldiers.[3] The SFABs were to consist of 800 senior officers and NCOs, which, the Army says, could act as a cadre to reform a full brigade combat team in a matter of months.[4] In May 2017, the initial SFAB staffing of 529 soldiers was underway, including 360 officers. The officers will have had previous command experience.[3]{{rp|21:20}} Commanders and leaders will have previously led BCTs at the same echelon.[5] The remaining personnel, all senior NCOs, are being recruited from across the Army.[6][7][8] Promotable E-4s who volunteer for the SFAB are automatically promoted to Sergeant upon completion of the Military Advisor Training Academy.[9] In the event of a national emergency SFABs could be augmented with new soldiers entering basic training and advanced individual training.[3]

On 16 October 2017, BG Brian Mennes of Force Management in the Army's G3/5/7 announced accelerated deployment of the first two SFABs, possibly by Spring 2018 to Aghanistan and Iraq, if required.[13] This was approved in early July 2017, by the Secretary of Defense and the Chief of Staff of the Army. These two SFABs would be trained in languages, how to work with interpreters, and equipped with the latest equipment including secure, but unclassified, communications and weapons to support coalition partners,[10][11][12] as well as unmanned aircraft systems (UASs).[13] An SFAB could provide up to 58 teams (possibly with additional Soldiers for force protection).[12]

A team of twelve soldiers would include a medic, personnel for intelligence support, and air support.[14]

Combat Advisors Training Course

In order to implement the framework that makes these new organizations so effective, the Army created the Military Advisor Training Academy (MATA) at Fort Benning. First SFAB fast tracked this training and has already deployed to Afghanistan and is currently embedded with FSFs.

The 54th began training with 2nd SFAB to continue on this track, with Maj. Jay Robinson, operations officer with the newly formed 3rd Squadron, 54th Cavalry Regiment (SFAB) in Gainesville, being the first National Guard member to complete the Combat Advisors Training Course (CATC).[15]

"Getting the SFAB units for the Florida National Guard is tremendous because we haven't received a new force structure in quite some time," said Lt. Col. Stephen Stroud, 3-54th squadron commander. "The fact that Maj. Robinson is the first Guardsman to graduate from the Combat Advisor Training Course is just outstanding. It's a feather in the cap for Florida, that we stood up and we're the first in line and the first to graduate."[16]

In July 2018, the 3rd Squadron, 54th Cavalry (SFAB) in Gainesville, FL and 2nd Battalion, 54th Infantry (SFAB) in Lakeland, FL were again the first National Guard units to send Soldiers to Ft. Bragg for a SFAB selection course, which is currently run by 2nd SFAB. Soldiers need to pass the selection course in order to attend CATC at MATA in Ft. Benning. As of July 2018, ten out of the eleven initial Soldiers passed the selection course. 3 Guardsmen from this first group are slotted to attend CATC in August 2018. They will be the first Guardsmen to attend the course subsequent to Maj. Robinson.
