About Cathy Moore graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a BA in English (with emphasis on language) in 1983. She worked as a Copywriter/Marketing Consultant for 25 years and has been an Instructional Designer for the past 16 years. For the last 20 years she has been self-employed at a training consultant and instructional designer to large organizations in the US, Europe, Australia and Latin America. She is the creator of the Action Mapping Model and the author of Map It: The Hands-On Guide to Strategic Training Design.

ACTION MAPPING is an instruction design model developed in 2008 by instructional designer Cathy Moore for the development of electronic training courses for businesses, government organizations and Non Governmental Organizations.

There are 4 steps in using action mapping to develop training. These are:

1.     Identify Goal

2.     Identify Actions

3.     Design Activities

4.     Identify Information

To use the Action Mapping model to develop training there are four specific steps that should be followed:

1.     Identify the business goal.

The designer must first ascertain what the business change they want to create to build an action map. The goal must be measurable and specifically state the resulting behavior or outcome, the time frame, and be a realistic situation that currently occurs within the business. This formula can be used when identifying the objective of the training.

2.     Identify the action the trainee must do.

Create a list of the actions that must be taken to meet the goal that has been set in step 1.

You must also understand why these actions are not currently being done or what is making it hard to do.

3.     Design practice activities.

For each action outlines there must be an activity to help the trainee practice completing the action. These activities should be real life situations that occur within the business.

4.     Identify what people need to know.

The information in this section should be highly specific and enable the trainee to complete the activities in step 3. Resist the urge to include information that is not directly related to the actions.

Advantages of Action Mapping model include:

It is a visual approach which makes it easy to present training to the client.

It is an intuitive process with easily identifiable benefits.

It reduces the addition of extraneous information, ensuring that the training does not become an information dump.

It is rich with contextual scenarios, that make the trainee an active participant of the training.

Disadvantages of Action Mapping model include:

It is limited to the business arena and not academia.

It is difficult to research its effectiveness through empirical testing.

The action mapping model was created under a decade ago and thus has not been investigated extensively. The creator of the model says "
