}}Adebayo Sikiru Osinowo is a Nigerian politician and businessman who was elected into the Lagos State House of Assembly and served for four terms, representing Kosofe Constituency I, from 2003 to 2019.[1] In 2018, he contested and won the senatorial primaries of his party, the All Progressives Congress against the incumbent Senator Gbenga Ashafa, to represent Lagos East Senatorial District at the Nigerian Senate.[2]

Education

Osinowo has a Diploma in Italian and another in Geometry (Building), which he obtained from the Universita per Stanieri, Perugia and the Instituto per Geomertra, Rome, Italy respectively, between 1979 and 1983. In 1984 he obtained a Specializazione (Masters Degree) in Mass Communication from Urbaniana Universita, Rome, Italy.[3][4]

Career

Osinowo worked as a Land Officer with the Federal Ministry of Works from 1977 till 1979. Upon his return from his academic pursuits in Italy, Osinowo founded his own company NITAL International in 1986. He also founded NIMCO Construction Company Limited and NIMCO Dredging Company Limited, a few years later.[3][4]

Politics

Osinowo began his political career with the National Party of Nigeria as a grassroots youth leader. In 1994, after the emergence of M. K. O. Abiola as the President-elect during the 1993 Presidential elections, and the subsequent annulment of the elections by the Military government, Osinowo and a group of Nigerian democrats formed the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO). It was on this platform that he and other members of the coalition continued to exert pressure on the military government of Sani Abacha to step down in favour of M.K.O. Abiola.[3]

In 1995, he was arrested alongside other members of the NADECO group and was incarcerated for the remainder of Sani Abacha’s regime.[5][3][6]

In 1999, he became a member of the Alliance for Democracy, a new political party, which also had Abraham Adesanya, former governors, Bisi Akande and Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu among other notable politicians as founding members.[3]

Osinowo won the 2003 elections on the platform of the Alliance for Democracy (AD) to represent Kosofe Constituency I at the Lagos State House of Assembly and was soon appointed as the Chairman of the House Committee on Lands.[4]

He was re-elected into the House of Assembly during the 2007, 2011 and 2015[7] state assembly elections, making him one of the top ranking members of the assembly.

On September 14, 2018, Osinowo officially declared his intention to run for the office of Senator representing Lagos East Senatorial District, at the National Assembly under the platform of the All Progressives Congress Party. His declaration attracted endorsements from key actors in Lagos state politics, including the Forum of Lagos State Local Council Chairmen, who threw their support behind his candidacy.[8] He went on to defeat the incumbent senator Gbenga Bareehu Ashafa, with a landslide at the party primaries, which held on the October 4, 2018.[9]

Awards and recognition

Osinowo has been awarded a number of awards over the years and some of them include:[10]

  • Legislator of the Year – 2011
  • Exemplary Leader of the Year – 2014
