Adrian Ocneanu

Romanian-American mathematician

won the 1974 gold medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad. He received his doctorate in 1983 from Ciprian Foias at the University of Warwickon Von Neumann Algebras (Actions of Discrete Amenable Groups on by Neumann Algebras). He was then until 1985 as a Miller Fellow at the University of California, Berkeley . He is a professor at Pennsylvania State University . He was a visiting scholar at the Collège de France and in Tokyo.

In 1985 he was one of the discoverers of the HOMFLY polynomial in knot theory (and stands in the name of the O). The others are Jim Hoste , Kenneth Millett , Peter Freyd , WBR Lickorish , David Yetter .

He designed for the University of Pennsylvania the Octacube , a three-dimensional structure made of stainless steel, which represents the three-dimensional projection of a four-dimensional regular polytope (24-cell, see Hurwitz quaternion ). It was donated to his memory by the widow of a university graduate of mathematics who was killed in 9/11 (Kermit C. Anderson).

He deals with operator algebras (theory of subfactors in von Neumann algebras after Vaughan Jones ) and connections to quantum groups, three-dimensional topological field theories and conformal field theories.

He was Invited Speaker at the 1990 International Convention for Mathematics in Kyoto ( Quantum Symmetry and the Classification of Sub-Factors ).
