History

Eight employees of the Atlantic Refining Company founded the credit union in 1937. Although chartered as a federal credit union, in its first years the entity provided services in the Dallas area only, to corporate employees of the oil company working in downtown Dallas. The credit union expanded along with the refining company and the U.S. oil industry.^[4] In 2001 it rebranded as Advancial, dropping the former name Atlantic Federal Credit Union. In 2002 Advancial reported total assets of $500 million.^[5]

In 2009 Advancial added consumer mortgage services and wholesale portfolio lending to the financial industry, through the formation of a credit union service organization (CUSO). A second CUSO was added in 2009 to provide disaster recovery services to businesses, as a joint partnership with another credit union. Also in 2009, Advancial expanded to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, in a partnership to provide credit union services to employees of Chesapeake Energy Corporation. In 2012 total reported assets reached $1 billion.^[6]

The credit union reported paying out $8.1 million to member customers in 2016, and paying out $11 million in 2017.^[7] From 1981 through 2012, Advancial merged in the operations and memberships of no less than 10 independent credit unions. ^[8] As of March 2019, it has 13 locations in 4 states including Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Alaska.

Advancial offers a typical range of consumer products and services including savings, money market, and checking accounts; consumer loans including auto and recreational vehicle loans, personal loans and lines of credit; mortgage services (because it is a federal credit union, mortgage services are available to members living in any state); credit cards, and individual retirement accounts.^[9] Advancial also markets consumer banking services for international consumers coming to the USA to work. Bankrate.com gives Advancial a four-star rating as “safe and sound” among credit unions.^[11] The data analytics site MX.com ranks Advancial as No. 163 on its annual list of the largest US-based credit unions, among the top 3% of USA credit unions, when ranked by total assets reported, as of May 2018.^[12] Based on reported data for second quarter 2018, the online loan comparison site LendingTree.com gives Advancial a “B+” for financial health.^[13]

Wholesale financial services

Advancial offers wholesale portfolio lending services in all 50 states, for residential and investment mortgages. It provides conventional, unconventional and “difficult” loan services, and is a Fannie Mae approved seller/servicer. Loan types offered include jumbo loans up to $3 million in value; non-warrantable condominium, “condotel” and co-op loans; asset depletion mortgage loans, investment property mortgage loans; and loans to US expatriates, foreign nationals and immigrants.^[19]

Disaster recovery services

Via a partnership with University Federal Credit Union, Advancial launched 2nd Node LLC in 2009. Operating as a CUSO, 2nd Node provides IT data business continuity and disaster recovery services including cloud computing, data center co-location services; and production, failover and backup systems. Both Advancial and University Federal use 2nd Node for IT business continuity and backup systems and services.^[20] University Federal Credit Union has 243,000+ members in Central Texas and Galveston County, Texas.^[21]
