It is no secret that the majority of professional athletes dedicate their life to the sport from a young age. With out the excitement the sport used to bring, a lack of African American heroes, the high cost of playing youth baseball, and the growth of single mother households, has caused a decline in the number of African Americans playing the game of baseballs

History

In 1947, Jackie Robinson of the Brooklyn Dodgers and Larry Doby of the Cleveland Indians desegregating Major League Baseball. Jackie Robinson was the first African American professional baseball player to play in Major League Baseball. By changing the way Americans thought, Robinson led the way to the rise of African Americans in professional baseball. However, in recent years, there has been noticeable concern about the declining number of African Americans in professional baseball.

Baseball Demographics, 1947-2016

In 1981, 18.7% of the league's players, and 22% of the All-Star game rosters, were African-American. On opening day this year, African-American players made up 8.4% of the league, and recent All-Star rosters were less than 5% African-American.

1981 had the highest percentage of black players, at [https://sabr.org/bioproj/topic/baseball-demographics-1947-2012 18.7 percent]. The 1981 All-Star Game had a total of 63 players, and there were 14 African-American all-stars, or 22 percent. So during the last 36 years, the percentage of black all-star baseball players has decreased from 22 percent to 4.6 percent.

Table 1 summarizes the percentage of the total pool of players who appeared in a given season who belong to each ethnic group. [1]

Why Are African Americans Missing in Baseball

Playing Sports As A Youth

The game of baseball is different than basketball and football. In baseball, a player doesn't have to rely on physical abilities as much as they do their fundamental skillset. Baseball is a very expensive sport. It is the most expensive sport out of basketball and football. With registration in football, a helmet, jersey, and shoulder pads are typically provided. Youth basketball requires purchase of a jersey and basketball shoes. Baseball requires the registration fee, uniform, glove, cleats, and if desired, a bat. [3] Most kids from the inner-city don’t have the excess cash to chase a baseball dream, so for many of them, that possibility ends by junior high school. They turn to sports such as basketball and football which isn’t as high-priced to play. In sports like football and basketball, it’s much easier for athletes to train on their own. However, to train for baseball, it requires at least one other person to make training effective. Private hitting coaches and pitching coaches can get expensive. [4]

Major League Baseball's Solution To The Problem

thumb

In an effort to get more African Americans back involved in the game of baseball, Major League Baseball is operating a program called Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI). RBI is a program that is designed to give kids from underprivileged communities an opportunity to play baseball and softball. RBI was founded in 1989 in South Central Los Angeles by former major league player John Young. As a scout for the Detroit Tigers of Major League Baseball, John noticed that there were a lack of African American players selected in the 1986 Major League Baseball draft. [5] With the desire to change this outcome, John took the necessary steps to develop RBI. This is one of the major things that Major League Baseball is trying to get more African Americans back into baseball.
