On September 5th 1996 a Boeing 747-400 passenger aircraft operating Air France Flight 437 was hit by severe clear-air turbulence whilst travelling above Burkina Faso, 30 miles from the city of Ougadougou. The aircraft was substantially damaged and was quickly repaired and put back into service, even though 1 person died whilst 29 others suffered various injuries.

Flight

The flight scheduled to land at Paris took of from Johannesburg at 18:29; there were 224 souls on board including 206 passengers and 18 crew members. The initial climb was routine and uneventful and the initial portion of the cruise was too. But at 00:22 things began to go wrong. The aircraft began to sway left to right in a rhythmic pattern before a sudden nose down 103° angle action then the autopilot corrected this manoeuvre. But then these actions happened again and the pilot in hand disengaged the autopilot. The aircraft suddenly became uncontrollable, banking left, and then a nose up 81° angle. The aircraft then was gladly corrected and the autopilot was reengaged. The rest of the flight was thoroughly uneventful and the plane routinely landed in Paris.

Aftermath

The aircraft was internally damaged substantially and several passengers suffered injuries. 9 passengers had sustained serious injuries whilst 21 had undergoed minor injuries. Not long after the incident 1 person succumbed to their injuries. The aircraft was repaired and put back into service. The BEA discovered that the weather radar had not properly been repaired and was given unreliable to the pilots, making them fly into a patch of turbulence.
