This international non-profit organisation represents and promotes the common interests of the airline catering industry. ACA focuses on regulatory, food quality, safety, taxation and environmental matters.[1] HistoryThe Airline Catering Association was founded in February 2018 by five inflight catering companies: Do_%26_Co, dnata, Gategroup, LSG_Sky_Chefs and Newrest.[2] The association is dealing mainly with the regulatory challenges in the European Union. Mid-term, the association is targeting a global reach of its activities and initiatives.[3] PrioritiesEU Plastic BanIn October 2018, the European Parliament has voted to ban a range of single-use plastics by 2021.[4] Airlines and catering providers use plastics onboard flights for its low cost, light weight and utility. The current European rules on international catering waste (ICW) dictate that airlines incinerate or bury all catering waste arriving from outside EU borders in deep landfill, in order to avoid the transfer of diseases. Many regulators take a precautionary approach and insist that all cabin waste - even from intra-EU flights - is incinerated regardless of source. For this reason, airline and catering industry officials think that the new policy will bring little environmental benefit. Nevertheless, ACA is not opposed to the new EU rules. ACA wants to list which alternatives are available that are fit for purpose for onboard use in terms of hygiene, resistance to high temperature, and storage on long flights. The organisation expects that airlines will pass on the cost associated with replacing plastic with sustainable or biodegradable materials to the passenger. [5] Members
