AIRMARINE Cup

The AIRMARINE Cup is a four-team invitational football tournament which will be held annually. 2019 is the Cup's first year and it consists of Malaysia,Singapore, Oman and Afghanistan which took place from March 20-23 at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium.

This tournament falls under the first FIFA calendar of 2019 and will give these four nations a chance to prepare for the 2022 World Cup qualifiers taking place in June 2019.

Malaysia's national team captain Mohd Zaquan Adha stated that Airmarine would be "important" for "collect(ing) ranking points before the World Cup and Asian Cup qualifiers". [1]

Malaysia chose to host the first Airmarine so as to ensure automatic qualification to the group stage of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.[2]

On February 25th 2019, it was announced that Malaysia will host the inaugural AIRMARINE Cup along with Singapore, Oman and Solomon Islands; however, on February 28th 2019, Solomon Islands withdrew their participation after realizing that FIFA rules dictate teams are not allowed to play more than two matches during the FIFA international window from March 18-26.[3]

To replace Solomon Islands, the Football Association of Malaysia invited Central Asian side Afghanistan.[4]

In terms of ranking, the 147th ranked Afghanistan are almost equal with Solomon Islands and they will be hoping to get more international experience after only playing three matches in 2018.[5]

The AIRMARINE Cup was also a testing ground for Singapore, with a new stand-in coach in Nazri Nasir who will lead the Lions for the first time.

[6]

The draw for the AIRMARINE Cup was made on March 4th 2019 at the Football Association of Malaysia headquarters and will see Malaysia face Singapore on March 20th.

This is going to be a very tough match. We aim to use this tournament to improve our world ranking and, at the same time, win the inaugural Cup." said national coach Tan Cheng Hoe ahead of their opening match against Singapore in the coming AIRMARINE Cup opening match on the 20th March 2019. [7]

Oman qualified to the final after they beat Afghanistan 5-0 in the opening match.

They went on to face Singapore, who beat hosts Malaysia thanks to a late winner from Faris Ramli

Malaysia beat Afghanistan 2-1 to take third place, while Oman won the inaugural tournament after beating Singapore 5-4 on penalties after both teams were tied 1-1 at full-time.

All matches took place at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium
