Akyrtas is a palace complex referred to VIII-IX centuries and situated in Zhambyl region in South Kazakhstan.

CONSTRUCTION

The complex is represented by residential houses and warehouses. The significance of this complex lies in the quality of the construction. The processing of the stones is very accurate. The foundation of the main construction is 4 metres high and each of the stone weighs 10 tons. The width of the walls is 2 metres.

INVESTIGATION

According to the words of Karl Baipakov, the first person who mentioned Akyrtas was a Russian painter Mikhail Znamensky in 1864. He was a part of military expedition when he saw the unknown ruins and then made a few sketches.

The investigation of this place started in 1867 and still, there are no exact data about the purpose of Akyrtas. Archaeologists don’t even know who built it. The most famous kazakh archaeologist Karl Baipakov said that the dating of different parts refers to a quite long period: from V -- III BC to XIV AD.

The first appearance of Akyrtas was found in the diaries of taoist monk Changchun. In 1222 he went from China to Samarkand through Sairam to the camp of Genghis khan. That is what he wrote in his diary: «On our way to Samarkand we saw a stone hillfort: the stones were completely red: there are traces of old military camp. Burial mounds are seen on the West, they look like stars of the Big Dipper».

The interesting fact is that there were no quarries near to Akyrtas. So this is another mystery: how did people do such a hard work without any equipment?

Another fact which confuses scientists is that there were no water sources, so this was not suitable for life. And thus, the next question appears: why did people build such a huge construction in a such unsuitable place?

EXPLANATIONS OF THE ORIGIN

There are 3 main theories explaining the origin of Akyrtas.

The first one was suggested by Petr Lerkh in the middle of XIX century. It says that Akyrtas was a Buddhist monastery.

In 1894 Vasiliy Barthold visited the palace. He found a picture of a fish on one of the stones and came to decision that it could be a monastery of nestorian christians, who escaped to Central Asia in the time of the collapse of Ancient Russia.

After almost a century, the third theory appeared. German scientist Burchard Brenties made a guess that Akyrtas was a residence of an Arab governor in Central Asia Kuteib ibn Muslim.

The last one was made by Taraz’ journalist Amantai Aizakhmetov. He said that, the ancient city Chigil, founded by Alexander the Great near to Taraz, was nothing but what we now know as Akyrtas.

AS A TOURIST ATTRACTION

Akytras is a very popular place among tourists. People believe that this place awakes hidden energy of human's body. And after visiting this place people say that they feel better and recovered. Also some claims that they saw UFOs there.

However, scientists revealed that the palace is situated on the spot of tectonic fault and this has a huge affect on people’s state.

THE EXPENSES OF INVESTIGATION

According to the words of specialists, it will cost 7 billions tenge to deeply investigate the Akyrtas palace. Kazakhstan scientists are inviting specialists from all around the world to study this area.
