Tofighi (born 1991) is an American interdisciplinary artist whose work constitutes research, performance, writing, musical composition, sculpture, video, and installation. Tofighi is most known for the two cycles of work "Legal Fictions" and "critical bands", as well as work in extended electric guitar improvisation and critical composition. BiographyAlan S. Tofighi was born in Sylmar, California and raised in Valencia, California and Southgate, California. He graduated from the California Institute of the Arts receiving a BFA in Art and a MFA in Art and Technology in 2016 and 2018 respectively. Prior to CalArts Tofighi was involved in several mayoral races and serving as a journalist for music webzine Buddyhead[1] and for Sean Carnage[2] documenting the underground scene from 2010 to 2012. At this time Tofighi managed the avant-hardcore punk band NASA Space Universe.[3]. Tofighi operated the Nouroboros Industrial Concern label (2007–2017) and the Flat Ledge imprint (2017–present) and served as the director of the interdisciplinary research center HACCEP (2018–present)[4] WorkTofighi's work consists of a research based practice in which analysis in the process/legitimation of competing myths, narratives, and subcultures as well as the ways that these processes are formed. Tofighi's amalgamated research comprises the use/misuse of varying media,forms of research, emergent technology, archives, video, composition, artificial intelligence, sculpture, virtual reality, installation, performance, low tech applications, writing, and drawing are deployed when appropriate. Research and contextualization on subjects such as cryptozoology, hoarding, cultural relics, artificial intelligence, computer chess, primary perception, DIY utopian medical tools, commercialized occultism, transgression, and copyright infringement are re-presented within a framework of critical theory, folk histories, class systems, and presentation of said subjects at large. Tofighi has shown work and/or performed in various spaces such as The Box, Pehrspace Gallery, The Wulf[5], Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions, DA Center for the Arts Pomona, The Troubadour, KCHUNG Radio, Soundwaves Series at Santa Monica Public Library, Orange County Center of Contemporary Art, Coaxial Gallery, The Center for Integrated Media at CalArts, College of the Canyons Art Gallery, Dem Passwords Gallery, Cubist Spinoff, Bob Baker Marionette Theater, Roxy , Hotel Congress, Hawthorne Theater, the Metro Operahouse, as well as other sites/spaces. Legal FictionsLegal Fictions is an ongoing cycle of interdisciplinary work (2012–present) that examines the complicated ontologies involved in the cross sections, of art, theory, histories of power, folk histories, and the complications that arise in the cross section of these discourses into socially accepted construct. Research, infiltration, integration, immersion, and understanding of these worlds and how to subvert each is key to the Legal Fictions project overall. Critical BandsThe Critical Bands are an ongoing series (2007–present) of Institutional Critique based performances in which the simplified histories of modern and post-modern discourse regarding performance art and musical composition are further complicated by a live reworking and re-presentation of method and history. Musical composition and improvisationSince 2007 Tofighi has been performing and recording music in the fields of electroacoustic and free improvisation in various performing units. Guitar, synthesizer, lap steel guitar, custom electronics, and spring reverb are often used. Within the forms of improvisation and composition acoustics, just intonation, preparations, extended techniques, extended plunderphonics, process music, and extended performance are conceptually applied utilizing prior and immediate histories of contemporary music.
