Aleksi Barrière is a French-Finnish theatre director born in Paris, France in 1989,[1] known for his work on contemporary music and opera.[2][3] BiographyBarrière majored in Philosophy at the Sorbonne and in Theatre Directing at the Theatre Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, and worked as an assistant to director Peter Sellars.[1][4] His first experiences were as a dramaturge and scenographer for various productions of contemporary music[5] and opera.[6] WorkHe created the music theatre group La Chambre aux échos in Paris with French conductor Clément Mao-Takacs,[7][8] the only such group in France lead together by a stage director and a conductor.[9][10] Their joint work has been widely presented in Europe and in the United States in various international festivals,[11][12][13] and in opera houses such as the Angers-Nantes Opéra[14] and the Finnish National Opera.[15] They have commissioned and premiered full-scale stage works by living composers, such as Kaija Saariaho's La Passion de Simone in its chamber version in 2013, and Juha T. Koskinen (fi)'s Ophelia/Tiefsee[16] in 2017, as well as various concert pieces.[17] As a guest director he has worked on world premieres of new plays and music theatre pieces with groups and ensembles in the United-States,[18][19] Finland,[20] and Norway,[21] and institutions such as the Hamburg State Opera.[22][23] A specialist of contemporary music theatre and the avant-garde, he is invited to give lectures[24][25] and write articles and pieces[26][27][28] on the subject.
