Alex Bigham (born 1982) is a political consultant and former Labour Party adviser. He was a political adviser to Stephen Twigg as Shadow Education Secretary and served on Lambeth Council from 2010 to 2018.

Education and early career

Bigham studied international politics at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London.

He was a press officer for the Labour Party in the run up to the United Kingdom general election, 2005 and then Head of Communications and Projects at the Foreign Policy Centre when he authored a number of reports including Understanding Iran,[1] Voices from Iran[2] and Having Faith in Foreign Policy. He managed The Iraq Commission,[3] in partnership with Channel 4 which called for the withdrawal of UK forces from Iraq. He was an early contributor to The Guardian's Comment is Free blog,[4] writing on a range of foreign policy issues.

Labour Party official and councillor

He became a political adviser to Stephen Twigg in 2011, when he was Shadow Education Secretary, an appointment that was rumoured to be opposed by sources in Ed Miliband's office.[5] Following the shadow cabinet reshuffle in 2013, he left to become deputy communications director for Ark Schools, an academy trust.[6]

In 2010, he was elected as a Councillor for the ward of Stockwell on Lambeth Council, which he represented until 2018. In that role, he set up the country's first ever Portuguese Community Centre, and fought a campaign with Joanna Lumley to save a Stockwell community centre.[7] He courted controversy with library campaigners in 2015, when he posted a yawning cat gif on twitter.[8]

In 2018, he left the UK Labour Party citing a lack of leadership on anti-semitism by Jeremy Corbyn.[9]

He established a political consultancy [10] specialising in education and crisis communications with clients including the Local Government Association and Deloitte LLP.
