It specialises in new arrangements of traditional Sufi songs from Arabic, Andalusian and Turkish sources. The songs are usually sung in Arabic and drawn from the poetry of great Sufis such as Ibn Arabi and Al Shushtari. This repertoire is supplemented by original compositions inspired by the Western classical tradition and also exhibiting Celtic and Flamenco influences. Two albums have been released by Al Firdaus: Safa (2014) and Nur (2017), and in January 2019 the single Hubbu Nabi was released. HistoryThe ensemble takes its name from the Arabic word Al-Firdaus meaning the highest level of Jannah (paradise) referred to in the Quran. Their music is rooted in the tradition of sama, which literally means listening and is a form of music played across the Islamic world to accompany ceremonies of dhikr, spiritual remembrance. Having studied both Western classical music and the vocal tradition of Islam, Ali Keeler saw an opportunity for a synthesis of music styles that both respected traditions and appealed to a new audience. After co-founding the Sufi music quartet Al Kauthar//soundcloud.com/alkauthar 1. Ali Keeler went on to form Al Firdaus in 2012 with former members of Al Kauthar, Salma Vives and Yusuf El Mezghildi and Moroccan vocalist and percussionist Omar Benlamlih. Two years after Al Firdaus was formed the ensemble recorded their first album. In 2017 they made their first visit to America; a Washington Post review//www.washingtonpost.com/news/arts-and-entertainment/wp/2016/02/07/at-a-time-of-stress-the-moving-music-of-islam/?utm_term=.cef5d644131f 2 of their Princeton University Chapel concert was headlined ' At a time of stress, the moving music of Islam' and told how 'Al Firdaus held the audience silently spellbound...' A further US tour followed in 2018 and Al Firdaus has also toured Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Turkey, Lebanon, and Malaysia, including performances at the prestigious Festival of Sufi Culture in Fez, Morocco, and International Cultural Festival of Inshad in Constantine, Algeria //alfirdaus-ensemble.es/en/next-concert-in-festival-of-inshad-in-constantine-algeria-2-2-2/ 3.
