He is known for having developed a new direction in psychotherapy based on Viktor Frankl’s logotherapy and logotheory, which is referred to as existential analysis. BiographyAlfried Laеngle was born on March 27, 1951 in Götzis, Austria. He studied medicine, philosophy and psychology at the Universities of Innsbruck, Rome, Toulouse and Vienna. In 1978, he was awarded a doctorate in medicine, and in 1982 – a Ph.D. in psychology. Between 1982 and1991, Laеngle worked closely with Frankl. In 1983, Laеngle founded the International Society of Logotherapy and Existential Analysis (GLE-International)[1], which has its headquarters in Vienna, and has national branches located across the world, including Germany, Switzerland, Russia, the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic, Poland, Latvia, Chile, Argentina, Mexico, the United States, and Canada. In 1991, V. Frankl withdrew from his honorary presidency of the society by stating that the new developments went so far that he considered Existential Analysis to no longer be identical to Logotherapy. At this point, the collaboration between the two was at an end. From 2002 to 2010 Laеngle was vice-president of the International Federation of Psychotherapy. Currently, he teaches and holds various positions at many universities around the world. In 2011, he was awarded the gold medal For Services to the Republic of Austria. From its foundation in 1984 until 2017 – President of International Society of Logotherapy and Existential Analysis. Personal LifeHe is married to Silvia Laеngle; they have four children. Main ideasExistential AnalysisGLE-International defines existential analysis as a phenomenological and person-oriented psychotherapy with the aim of guiding a person towards experiencing freely, the inner and outer world (both mentally and emotionally). It aims at enabling a person to come to authentic decisions and to discover a truly responsible way of dealing with life and the world. Existential Analysis can be applied in cases of psychosocial, psychosomatic and psychologically caused disorders in both experience and behavior. The psychotherapeutic process utilizes a phenomenological analysis of emotions, considered to be the centre of experience. Biographical work and empathic listening by the therapist, contribute to an improvement in emotional accessibility and understanding. Fundamental MotivationsBased on his phenomenological studies, Alfried Laеngle described a system of four fundamental dimensions of existence which are so basic in living one’s life, that they are constantly present and constantly moving the person. They are contained in all motivations – therefore they have been termed fundamental existential motivations:
The phenomenological method – Personal Existential Analysis (PEA)In order to work through difficult life situations, which occupy the person and block their performance, a specific method has been developed which is called the processual model. It is phenomenologically based, i.e. not giving interpretations but working with the resources of the person. It consists of four steps, starting with a proper and factual description of the experienced situation, followed by turning towards the subjective experience, primary feelings and reactions. The deepest level is reached in the next step, which looks at a deeper understanding of the reactions to a personal stand and evaluation of the experience, coming to the authentic will to act (unsure of meaning). Eventually the strategy of an effective way to deal with the situation is elaborated. BibliographyLängle A (2016) Existenzanalyse. Existentielle Zugänge der Psychotherapie.
