== Overview

Mr. Al “Hollywood” Meggett was born on February 28, 1931. His parents named him Albert Meggett. He is an African-American boxing professional, entertainer, mentor and leader. He has contributed to the boxing industry for more than 75 years while training thousands of boxers, securing boxing professional positions for many, acting as a surrogate father to some and a mentor to all.

Mr. Meggett was born in Manhattan, New York as the final child to his parents during the American Great Depression. His family raised him and his siblings in Harlem, New York. Hollywood grew up in a cultural diversified community that introduced him to being open to all people on an international level.

His first experience with the boxing ring at 12 years old in 1943 was unexpected, but lasting. The day he found boxing at that young age, Hollywood never let it go. He immediately joined his local boxing club. He stayed with boxing until the potential for the military drafted required him to leave his home in Harlem.

This contributed to his life in the United States military. Serving in the armed forces taught Mr. Meggett about travel, discipline and cultural challenges. Due to his military service, Mr. Meggett was introduced to the differences that existed in America between northern cultures and southern cultures.

Mr. Meggett’s post-military life was filled with his great love of boxing, the exploration of the world and finding his own way in the boxing industry. He worked many other jobs to take of his growing family, but through it all, he maintained his connection to boxing while serving and learning about various boxing professional options.

By the turn of the decades between the 1970’s and 1980’s, Mr. Meggett decided to head back to his family’s home of Charleston County, South Carolina. He came with the mission of beginning a brand new boxing program.

More than three decades later, Mr. Meggett is still serving the Charleston, South Carolina community and the citizens of it through boxing. He is on his third generation of boxers in his boxing program. He has relationships with people all over the world, but most of all Hollywood has the loyalty of those whose lives he has touched inside and outside of the boxing ring.

== Personal Life ==

Early Life

Hollywood began his life as the baby child of his family. He was raised with his family of origin and some of his extended family members in the Harlem borough of New York City. All of the adults in their household worked, including his mother. All of the children saw strong role models with consistent work ethics growing up. In the years that Mr. Meggett grew up so many amazing occurrences happened in the landscape of American society.

The Great Depression affected the financial means of many families which caused most adult family members to have to work to survive. The Great Migration of African Americans moving northward out of the southern states became the reason that Mr. Meggett’s parents moved out of their native South Carolina.

The World War caused men to have to leave their families and women to take factory jobs that normally would have gone to women. The Meggett household was no different on this account. His father had to go to war. His mother worked in a factory.

The Harlem Renaissance affected social life, artistic development and educational obligation in the way Harlem’s youth was introduced to the arts, athletics and educational expectations. Mr. Meggett experienced this at school in an environment of teachers who not only educated, but encouraged their students to locate and share their talents with the world. He experienced the social and economic changes that were brought about through movements to enrich the lives of African American citizens.

The Korean War led to the enlistment of many American young men, including Mr. Meggett. He experienced a culture outside of his northern upbringing due to his military assignments. Once he left the military, he went back to the city of his birth and his new family.

Mid Life

Mr. Meggett returned to boxing in another way after his honorable military discharge. He had to secure non-military employment to care for his family. It was not long until he found his way back to his love of boxing.

Instead of fighting, he decided to help athletes younger than himself. He began a new journey in boxing through coaching. He was always in a rush after work to get to the boxing gym to help the young men who were waiting to practice their boxing skills.

Mr. Meggett managed his life between his regular day work, a growing family and a strict schedule that allowed him access to boxing. He lost some loved ones in these years that deeply impacted him. Yet, boxing became the constant in his life.

He went out of the country a few times to various countries for entertainment and athletics. He grew in boxing as a professional, through networking and his reputation as a good person in the industry.

He had to come to Charleston, South Carolina to take of some business for his father around 1978. While there on the beach, his closest friend suggested that he return to the city of Charleston to raise his family and share boxing. The suggestion was unexpected but accepted by Mr. Meggett.

Current

Mr. Meggett came to Charleston, South Carolina with his family in 1979. He had no contacts or way of completely knowing how he would get his boxing program from an idea to a reality. He secured employment, took a training program and worked where he could find it.

Mr. Meggett kept making contacts to various people who were helpful to him. He was determined to bring his boxing gym to the high risk communities that needed him. He was given his gym in one of the city’s old firehouses in four years time.

Mr. Meggett had a truly adventurous opening event that spanned more than one day. He had more than one celebrity to show up to wish him well along with government officials and local citizens alike. The guest included: Joe Frazier, Muhhammd Ali, Vincent Shomo, Mayor Joe Riley and many more. Other government officials visited Mr. Meggett’s boxing gym over the years, they included: Fritz Hollings, Strom Thurmond and some United States attorney generals as well.

In the 30 plus years that would follow, Mr. Meggett has taken to touching the lives of all of those whom he can share boxing, mentorship and character growth within the hometown of his ancestors and family that is Charleston, South Carolina.

== Military Service ==

Mr. Meggett entered into the occupation of naval seaman with the United Stated Navy at the young at of 19 years old. He was initially going to enter the Air Force the year before, but delays prevented him from doing so. He went into his military service during the Korean War.

He was sent further north to his basic training. After his graduation, he was stationed into the deep South. For all of the Meggett children, they had never been further than one state beyond New York.

Arriving South and the treatment he received affected Mr. Meggett in ways that he had not expected. It was an intense difference in so many ways: communication, levels of respect, business patronage, transportation….all due to segregation.

Learning his family in South Carolina became the gift of the military locating Mr. Meggett in the South. He was able to develop bonds and relationships with his extended family of relatives that otherwise would not have happened. Once, his enlistment time ended, Mr. Meggett left his naval post in Charleston, South Carolina the same day to return back to New York.

== Professional Entertainment ==

Dance

Mr. Meggett and his twin brother were placed into professional dance classes by their Godmother at the age of 12. They were classically trained in modern dance style by a very well known teacher throughout New York, Mary Bruce. As they advanced, their teacher gave them their very own dance routine for performances.

The two went on to become a part of a performance team. They performed on stages that shared many celebrities of that era, in some of the largest venues throughout the five boroughs of New York City. Eventually, the dancing duo went on to become dancing teachers to adults. They, also, operated their own dancing business where they performed at community and social events.

As an adult, Mr. Meggett traveled to Europe with a good friend who placed him into large theaters with sold out shows. He was able to learn not only about the dance, but about management skills for developing shows, marketing shows, making connections and budgeting. He danced in the same venues that Josephine Baker once did.

Acting

Mr. Meggett was first on television airwaves as a dance contestant in his youth. Many years went by and Mr. Meggett went on to become a part of many films and commercials that were shot in Charleston, South Carolina.

Mr. Meggett not only worked on major movies, but he was a part of a commercial that ran so long until he received an invitation into the Screen Actors Guild. He has, also, made contributions to the movie industry behind the scenes as a set builder.

Literature

Mr. Meggett has taken his life experiences and lessons into the profession of literature. He has teamed up with Dr. Susan R. Carn, MBA, MA (Angel) of Serenity’s House Omni-Media Group to write about his life adventures into educational materials to showcase his nearly 90 years of living.

Dr. Carn has connected with Mr. Meggett to develop his life’s wisdom into a brand project called Boxing Unlimited. The two work very well together. Boxing Unlimited is a combination of Mr. Meggett’s dictation of his mentorship abilities, perspectives, memorabilia and teaching style with Dr. Carn’s genius perspectives in business development, life coaching and spiritual development into print, digital and online materials. The entire project is a creation of Mr. Meggett’s and Dr. Carn’s special brand of human development into a customizable life strategy.

== Boxing Career ==

Boxer

Mr. Meggett was only 12 years old when he unexpectedly happened upon the first boxing ring that he had seen in his life. It was in the basement of a building that Mr. Meggett was attending for a completely different extracurricular activity. Being in the presence of the ring stopped Mr. Meggett in his tracks. In that moment, it was a mystical experience that he felt himself being drawn to the boxing ring. On that same day, he stepped into the ring for the first time and never let boxing go! From his first day in the ring, he never allowed it to be out of his life. As a fighter, Mr. Meggett made it to the Golden Glove championships.

Coach

Mr. Meggett became a boxing coach after his honorable discharge from the United States Navy and his return to New York. He was and is dedicated as a boxing coach. He worked with men in the boxing industry who were respected and the best at what they did within the industry. He was able to keep boxing in his life while serving to help young fighters achieve their goals inside and outside of the boxing ring.

Trainer

Mr. Meggett became a trainer out of necessity. He was already coaching youth in boxing, but he had to learn how to care for their bodies. He went on to learn how to pack the necessary equipment for his fighters, but he learned the unspoken and what was never written down by boxing professional masters. While serving as a coach and trainer through the United States of America Boxing Commission’s amateur boxing programs, Mr. Meggett served in Michigan to many fighters that would go on to become world champions, including Floyd Mayweather, Jr.

Manager

Mr. Meggett expanded into acquiring his license as a New York Boxing Commission manager while very young. He did so after some challenges that he faced with coaching and training that caused him to view his position in the boxing profession as limited. Mr. Meggett had fighters and was willing to take on the responsibility to maintain the daily operations of their careers.

Promoter

Mr. Meggett easily went into the promotions aspects of boxing once he had his fighters that he was managing their careers and income to invest in. He was able to use his many years of friendships and professional connections to get into The Madison Square Gardens program with one of his fighters which led to them becoming a part of boxing tickets throughout the city of New York. Eventually, Mr. Meggett and his fighter would go out of state and out of the country to scheduled fights.

== Philanthropy ==

Mentorship

Mr. Meggett has used boxing as his tool of strategy to touch the lives of literally thousands of people. He has served in New York and South Carolina in a way that cannot be qualified in any other way than for life development skills. He has a very high social intelligence that causes him to observe his fighters in multiple perspectives. He takes what he observes as a means of showing his fighters and those he trains in multiple boxing professions about themselves to encourage them to become better. Anyone who has trained with Mr. Meggett will all agree to the fact that he prepares his athletes and business professionals inside of and outside of the ring.

Career Builder

Mr. Meggett has contributed to the construction of more than boxing fighters; he has helped many people who wanted to be in the industry of boxing outside of the ring expand into boxing professionals. He has done that with his ability to bring people into his boxing world through teaching by example and showing his boxing professionals how to be the best at their craft. Mr. Meggett has contributed to the development of: boxing coaches, boxing trainers, boxing managers, boxing promoters and boxing referees.
