Ali Abdul-Muttalib Abbas (Arabic: علي عبد المطلب عباس ; born 8 October 1957) is an Iraqi-Australian Programmer and former Head of New Technology and Systems Analyst at Zakum Development Company from December 1982 to his resignation in 2005[1]. During his tenure at ZADCO, Abbas solely developed crucial infrastructure such as the Zadco Record Management System (ZRMS) and introduced technological innovations to his department such as the Intranet.

Birth and Early Life

Ali Abbas was born on October 8th 1957 in Baghdad, Iraq, to Abdul-Muttalib Abbas and Fatima Hashim. Ali's father was a prominent Lawyer and community figure in the community of Harthiya. His mother was a Sayyidah and traces her lineage to the Prophet Mohammad. The Abbas family was a relatively Middle-Class family which yielded some influence at the time. As a child, Ali Abbas moved schools frequently. Upon graduating secondary school, Ali moved to the southern Iraqi town of Basra to study Marine Engineering at the University of Basra, he eventually dropped out after 6 months. In 1978, much to his father's disagreement, Ali moved to the United Kingdom and started attending Kitson College, studying his A-Levels till late 1979. He then studied his Higher national diploma in Maths, Stats, Computing at Leeds Polytechnic successfully graduating in 1981[2]. During his enrollment in the UK, Ali worked multiple jobs to pay for his tuition, including a part-time job at Morrisons Supermarkets. Abbas subsequently left the UK upon graduating and moved to Oran, Algeria, where he lived for three months. In 1982, Abbas immigrated to Abu Dhabi after being employed by ZADCO as a computer operator[3].

Whilst living in Abu Dhabi, Abbas would often visit Romania and learnt conversational Romanian.

Employment at ZADCO (1982-2005)

Upon entering employment at ZADCO, Ali progressed quickly to Chief operator on the IBM 4341 VM/SP in a year[4]. Abbas was assigned many different operating systems and responsibilities throughout his employment at ZADCO.

Notable Innovations

  • Designed & implemented the ZADCO Management System (ZAMC). The system was a VSAM database, which holds all the instruments real time values. The system allowed engineers to produce reports, plots & inquiries about the real time values of the instruments offshore. The system consisted of over 30 programs written in PL/I, CICS,and COBOL II & GDDM graphics interface.
  • Designed & implemented the Stock control system (SCS). This system was to control the consumable of data processing department.The system was written using CICS & VS/COBOL.
  • Was involved in the maintenance of a unique system written by French Company (MATRA) to control and manage the systematic changes of Instruments offshore.The system consisted of nearly 400 modules written in PL/1 & FORTRAN.
  • Designed & implemented the Human Resources Documentation System (HRDS). This was a complete employees records system, which holds all the information concerning employee’s data in Arabic and English.This system enables the company to produce any type of reports required in Arabic and English and also can be utilized for the government reports relating to immigration & security card (This system requires DOS 5.0 or above using Arabic interface & DBASE-IV V.2.0.). (This system was converted to ACCESS 2.0, 95 and 2000 (Arabic version.))
  • Designed & implemented the Weekly Report System (WRS). This system allowed employees to produce their own weekly & monthly reports to report to management. It also allowed management to access these reports & produce reports accordingly. (DBASE-IV V2.0)
  • Designed & implemented the Personnel Action Form (PAFS). This system main objective was to produce pre-printed forms to be distributed to employees also to calculate their salaries. (ACCESS 2.0)
  • Designed & implemented the Service Order system (SORS).This system was designed to collect service orders from different departments and forward these orders to the assigned department to be submitted to the contractor and to alert the finance department to be actioned.
  • Designed & implemented the crucial ZADCO Corporate Records Management System (ZRMS). The key objectives of the ZRMS are summarized below: i. Provide access to the corporate Classification structure and Retention Schedule. ii. Be used as a tool for the rationalization of the existing records within a Department. iii. By Department - Classify and index records and files. iv. By Department - Control the retention periods of records and files. v. By Department - Control and manage the location of files held on-floor as well as in the company Records office. vi. Guide a user through a series of tasks, controlling their actions and producing reports as required. vii. Guide, in the future, a user to records, which are in hard copy format or held online. viii. Have the capability of searching and retrieving any records or documentation held online. This system is written in ACCESS 2.
  • Also has written many applications using the following software packages: (Lotus, FREELENSE, Microsoft Excel, Superbase and BASIC)

Present (2005- )

Ali Abbas married in 2001 and moved his family out of Abu Dhabi to live in Western Australia in 2005.

He has 2 daughters and a son.

Ali is a Muslim, can speak fluent English and Arabic and is currently retired.
