She is best known as the lead singer for the British band The Fauns, her vocalist collaborations with Hyetal.[1], Typesun[2] and Dolman[3] as well as contributing her voice to several soundtracks, amongst which: One Strange Rock (Darren Aronofsky) for National Geographic, and Annihilation (Alex Garland) for Paramount Pictures. BiographyFollowing her interest in music, Alison moved to Bristol - Britain’s ‘most musical city’[4] (as defined by The Telegraph in association with PRS) - in 2005. Alison started her band The Fauns in 2008, a Shoegaze quintet inspired by the heyday of dream pop and the atmospheric power of soundtracks, blending her dainty vocals with indie-influenced alternative rock. They subsequently released their self-titled debut album ‘The Fauns’ on their own label Laser Ghost Recordings in 2009. Despite the lack of a publicity campaign, her 2009 debut album garnered attention for its mesmerising atmospherics, with word of mouth helping it draw the attention of BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio 6 Music DJ Steve Lamacq, which propelled the band’s debut to sell more than 5,000 copies through “word of mouth". The band's efforts and perseverance triggered a winning streak when their hard work and recently acquired popularity paid off, culminating in a collaboration that saw The Fauns’ second album Lights being fully supported by well-established talents in the industry: Lights[5] was released on Portishead instrumentalist Geoff Barrow’s label Invada in 2013 and self-produced alongside engineers Tim Allen (Bat For Lashes, Adding Machine) and Jim Barr (Get The Blessing, Portishead)[5] Lights[5] was received to international critical acclaim achieving 4 star reviews in The Times[6], The Line Of Best Fit[7], Uncut, The Arts Desk[8], The Gizzle[9], and Contact Music[10] besides scoring a 16/20[11] in Crack Magazine. Amongst The Fauns' best-known tracks, ‘Let’s Go’ was featured in Q Magazine’s playlist.[12] Her ethereal vocals were remixed by English composer Clint Mansell (Requiem for a Dream, Black Swan, The Fountain) The remix was released as a limited edition single on vinyl for Record Store Day 2013, which began an ongoing music collaboration between the two parts. Garner played live in several radio sessions on the Lauren Laverne show on BBC Radio 6 Music alongside Xfm to hundreds of thousands of listeners worldwide. Her second single from the album ‘In Flames’ subsequently went on to win Steve Lemacq’s Rebel Playlist 2014 on a public vote[13] and track '4am' was also chosen by pan-European British media and telecommunications company Sky Television to become the official theme for The Singapore Formula One in 2015. The Fauns toured extensively with French post rock band Alcest in early 2014 throughout Europe and subsequently embarked upon their own international headline concert tours. Her atmospheric and unusual voice has led Garner to be asked to collaborate on projects with other well-respected artists in the industry over the years, including her critically acclaimed album Broadcast[1] with UK based electronic music producer Hyetal (scoring 4/5 in British daily newspaper The Guardian[14]), the follow up to thir first release Modern Worship. Other artistic partnerships include those with English record producer, drummer and DJ Typesun (on single Icebergs[2]), German Rock band Din Martin’s cut The Second Before You Faint[15], and Bristol duo Dolman (formed of Bristol veteran musicians Ben Salisbury and Scott Hendy)'s self-titled album Dolman[3]. Australian Synthwave and Video Game composing duo Power Glove also immortalised Garner’s captivating vocals in their remixed track ‘4am’. Garner toured with Hyetal in 2013 providing vocals at several festivals, including Benicàssim. In recent times, Alison has turned to work on soundtracks, creating atmospheric moods with her voice, providing intricate harmonic vocal layers for soundtracks such as those to One Strange Rock (Darren Aronofsky) for National Geographic and Annihilation (Alex Garland) for Paramount Pictures.
