Alistair Moffat is a New Zealand-born Australian-resident computer scientist.

After completing a BSc(Hons) (1979) and PhD (1985)^[1] at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand, he joined The University of Melbourne in 1986, where he was promoted to Professor in 2002, and continues to be a member of the University's School of Computing and Information Systems.^[2]

Alistair was Head of the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering at the University from 2007 to 2011, and Associate Dean (Curriculum) in the Melbourne School of Engineering from 2007-2009.

Research

Alistair is the author of two research books (Managing Gigabytes: Compressing and Indexing Documents and Images, with Ian H. Witten and Timothy C. Bell, and Compression and Coding Algorithms, with Andrew Turpin); and author or co-author of more than 200 research papers.^[3][4][5]

His research activities span a range of areas, including text and index compression, web search, and information retrieval evaluation methodologies.

Teaching

Alistair has taught programming skills in a variety of languages to approximately 20,000 science and engineering students through his 35-year academic career.

He is author of the programming textbook Programming, Problem Solving, and Abstraction with C.^[6]

In recognition of his teaching activities, Alistair was a recipient of an Australian Carrick Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning in 2006, for ″sustained teaching excellence over two decades, for involvement in transition programs for new students and new staff, and for leadership in educational administration″.^[7]
