}}Ali Subotnick is an American curator who currently programs exhibitions as an adjunct curator at the Hammer Museum at the University of California, Los Angeles, and was curator of Frieze Projects, a large-scale exhibition of 17 site-specific art commissions in the Paramount Studios backlot, during the first edition of the Frieze art fair in Los Angeles in 2019.[1] Subotnick joined the Hammer Museum in 2006 and has curated exhibitions at the institution by artists including Mark Leckey, Llyn Foulkes, and Frances Stark.[2] She co-curated the 2012 Made in L.A. biennial, along with Hammer Museum Senior Curator Anne Ellegood and a team of curators from LA>[3] In 2017, she programmed Expo Chicago's screening series of film, video, and new-media works, “Expo Video.”[4]

Subotnick has characterized her curatorial sensibility as aligned with elements of the grotesque and surreal, and notes an interest in the promotion of work by underacknowledged and local artists, and artists that defy categories.[5] She is known for her collaborative projects with artist Maurizio Cattelan and curator Massimiliano Gioni, with whom she co-curated the 4th Berlin Biennial and founded the publication Charley and the alternative art space Wrong Gallery in New York in 2002.[6] The Wrong Gallery, totaling one and a half square feet of exhibition space, occupied a doorway (and little more) on West 20th Street in Chelsea; before it was shuttered in 2005, the gallery featured small-scale projects by artists Martin Creed, Elizabeth Peyton, and Lawrence Weiner, among others.[7][8][9]
