Allen McCloskey (Born 1981) is a delegate to the California State Democratic Party, representing Humboldt County. He is best known for his political activism as a member of the California Progressive Democrats and as a Union Steward with NUHW.[1] He has garnered public attention for his activism promoting the rights of workers in protests against Saint Joseph Healthcare [2] and Rockport Healthcare Services [3] as well as his activism for Indigenous-American causes, including the return of Tuluwat Island in Humboldt Bay to the Wiyot Tribe.[4]

Saint Joseph Healthcare Unionization and Protests

McCloskey, a lab tech at Saint Joseph's Hospital in Eureka, California led the unionization of Saint Joseph Hospital and Redwood Memorial Hospital prior to the hospitals' acquisition via merger by Providence Health & Services. After the merger, the National Union of Healthcare Workers and the California Nurses Association declared a staffing emergency at both hospitals.[5] McCloskey was a prominent critic of staffing issues at the hospital. In a series of public protests he spoke about the issue, stating that staff commonly heard the complaint that the administration cared more about “productivity and profits than [they] do about patient care.” [6] He continues to represent the union in ongoing staffing negotiations.

Political Career

McCloskey represents the California Democratic Party as a Second Assembly District Delegate. He was also briefly a candidate for city-council in Eureka, California but withdrew from the race in 2016 citing unexpected health concerns.[7]
