Alonso de SandovalAlonso de Sandoval was born December 7, 1576 in Seville, Spain. He later passed on December 25, 1652 in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia. He was known as a Spanish Jesuit priest and missionary in Colombia and various other places. He devoted his entire adult life to evangelizing to African slaves being shipped into Cartagena de Indias. He is particularly known for his writing "The Treatise on Slavery" in 1627, depicting the nature, customs, enslavement, rites and beliefs of theses enslaved Africans. He was also incredibly well know for his involvement within these groups in his aspirations and fascinations within their languages to better help towards evangelizing to them with both his interpreters and himself.Biography————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————— was born in 1576 in Seville. He followed his parents whom emigrated to Peru, where his father was then appointed accountant to the Royal Treasury of Lima . He studied at the San Martin de Lima seminary school. He then entered the novitiate of the Society of Jesus on June 30, 1595, in Lima. In 1605 he joined the newly founded College of Jesus in Cartagena . He then spends the majority of the rest of his life, until his death in 1652, in Lima. He discovered that most black, African, slaves landed in the port of Cartagena and were forcibly baptized before leaving without any religious instruction 1 . He however did not believe that this was the way to true salvation, because they did not understand what was being told to them. Some thought that they were having spells put of them, others thought it was a form of punishment, and so many other misconstrued believes. So, Father Sandoval began to personally baptize these people years. What is now said to actually be around forty thousand enslaved Africans. He did this many ways in whichever means possible. Either through splashing them with water, or in more the traditional sense as to dunking them in the actual bodies of water. But the difference with him is that since he studied them closely he could better appeal to their culture and even languages, sometimes, to help them to understand what was going on. But before ever leaving for Lima in 1617, he trained the Spanish Jesuit Peter Claver as a mentor to him. He then became his fellow missionary and companion. During his stay in Lima, he began to collect documentation and bibliography on Africa, as well compiling the stories of ancient philosophers that other Jesuits studied and came to the conclusion that language is the root of understanding. Within the language barrier there was no possible way for the enslaved to possibly understand the way to the Lord and later go to heaven and be forgiven for their trespasses. And while his ways of going about it are immoral to us today considering that he bought his own slaves as translators for it, some believe that he all in all was a good Catholic man trying to bring as many African slaves to Christ as he could. == Sources————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————— Sandoval, Alonso De., et al.
