American Documentary Film Festival is a film festival held annually in Palm Springs, California each Spring. The festival showcases documentary films from around the world and has grown from a 5-day event, at its inception in April 2012, to a 7-day fest starting in 2017[1]. Founded by Teddy Grouya, the festival often referred to as AmDocs[2] features a partnership with other documentary film festivals in Mexico, Ecuador, and the Republic of Kosovo[3].

Multiple venues over the years have housed the festival, which has received multiple honors from MovieMaker magazine. Voted one of the top five coolest documentary film festivals in the world[4] and one of the top 50 film festivals worth the entry fee[5], AmDocs calls Palm Springs' historic Camelot Theatres (now the Palm Springs Cultural Center) its home today. Past festivals have included additional screenings at the Century Theatres and Helene Galen Performing Arts Center in Rancho Mirage, and the Indian Wells Theater on California State University, San Bernardino's Palm Desert campus.

The festival includes a Film Fund pitch competition, open to the public free of charge, held on the opening day of the festival annually[6]. A team of industry professionals reviews a showreel, or sizzle reel, created by filmmakers selected from previous submissions, and listens to accompanying filmmakers' pitches explaining why a particular film should receive funding. On AmDocs' closing night each year, Film Fund winners are announced with an aggregate funding of up to $50,000.[7] Past AmDocs Film Fund winners have gone on to be Oscars shortlisted, or recipients of TV's Emmy Awards. Titles of past AmDocs Film Fund recipients include highly-acclaimed films such as The Trials of Muhammad Ali, and 2017 AmDocs Film Fund winning recipient United Skates [https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4009728/], which would later be acquired by HBO[8], executive produced by John Legend, and make its television premiere on HBO in February 2019.

The festival annually acknowledges a filmmaker with the Making A Difference Award. Past recipients have included Oliver Stone, Joe Berlinger, and Peter Bogdanovich. Recent films shown at the festival include Walking the Camino: Six Ways to Santiago  , I Live to Sing [https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2816158/], Rebels on Pointe [https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6094970/] and many more.

Special guests at past festivals have included singer Dionne Warwick, Oliver Stone, actor George Takei, actor Shia LeBouf, actress Sadie Katz, LGBT activist Cleve Jones, Amazing Race host Phil Keoghan, Tony Robbins, Academy Awards nominee Julie Cohen, Pierce Brosnan and many more.
