ReceptionArlequins reviewer Giovanni Carta included it in his list of the best six albums of 2018.[7] The French Prog Critique site awarded An Alien Heat five stars out of five in its review, calling the album "ambitious" and saying that all the compositions were worth the listen, with their blend of 70s ambience, hovering rock and psychedelic music[8]. French print magazine Highlands[9] and DME Let It Rock gave the release four out of five stars. The DME Let It Rock reviewers wrote "It’s quite an infectious trip, from the light, yet powerful and playful, pulse of “Hothouse Flowers” – delivered by Buck Dharma and stricken with cowbell by Albert Bouchard who also supplied drums and vocals on most of the tracks – to “Old Friends With New Faces” whose lulling strum is shot through with Steve York’s anxious bass. It’s also naturally adventurous, and although the record’s events may seem unclear to those alien to Moorcock’s novels, the music will visit a few unexpected places during the album’s course.[10]" Sea of Tranquility gave the album two out of five stars. The reviewer wrote "Maybe I went into this album with expectation levels too high, but where I’m left is no further forward as to what An Alien Heat is meant to reveal both musically and thematically. Possibly if you are a follower of Moorcock’s literary works or are more acquainted with Spirits Burning then you’ll dismiss my thoughts as having missed the point."[11] Music Street Journal's Gary Hill noted that "perhaps what's so impressive about this (more than anything else) is the lineup of musicians featured on the album.[12].
