Andrei Tokmakoff is a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Chicago.[1] He received his undergraduate degree from Cal. State Univ., Sacramento in 1989 and his masters and PhD from Stanford University in 1992 and 1995, respectively. He completed his postdoctoral research[2] at the Technical University of Munich, University of Chicago, and UC Berkeley. Tokmakoff started his academic career at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he served on the faculty from 1998-2012, until moving to the University of Chicago. His group utilizes ultrafast vibrational spectroscopy to explore chemical dynamics in water and molecular dynamics of processes relevant to biology.[3][4] His research focuses on understanding how the dynamical nature of water's hydrogen bond network affects its physical properties, aqueous chemical reactions, hydrophobicity, and how water influences the structure and dynamics of biological macromolecules such as proteins.[5] The challenge with these problems is the need for experimental tools that can watch molecular structures change in real time. His group develops advanced instrumentation and ultrafast infrared light sources for structure-sensitive vibrational spectroscopies, such as 2D IR spectroscopy, and applies these methods to characterize molecular dynamics on time scales varying from 10−14 to 103 seconds.[6] Experiments are complemented by theoretical work on nonlinear spectroscopy, statistical mechanical modeling, and molecular dynamics computer simulations.
