He is best known for his time spent playing with Uncle Joe's Big Ol' Driver (1992 - 1996).[1] and The Presidents of the United States of America (2004 - 2015). He currently plays with Dirty Sweet[2] as well as his namesake band, The Andrew McKeag Band[3]

McKeag's parents, Michael J. McKeag and Margaret McElwaine, met while working at volunteer FM radio station KRAB[4] in Seattle, WA, where he was born. His father was an engineer for the station, while his mother worked on air as well as other various station tasks. In 1976, his family moved to Portland, OR. Early on, McKeag began playing piano, and then trumpet in elementary school, eventually picking up the guitar at 12 years old[5]. He played in various local bands while attending Meadow Park Junior High and Sunset High School near Cedar Mill, Oregon.

In 1988 McKeag moved to San Diego and began playing with various bands in the area, including Liquid Sunshine and Uncle Joe's Big Ol' Driver. UJBOD released two full length albums, a few 7” singles and appeared on a handful of compilation albums. UJBOD played multiple regional and national tours throughout the mid-1990’s.

After moving with UJBOD to Seattle in 1995 and UJBOD ending in 1996, McKeag started a new band called Shuggie, in honor of one of his musical heroes, guitarist Shuggie Otis. The initial line-up featured James Atkins (Hammerbox) on bass and Shawn Allen (Room Nine) on drums. Shuggie recorded it’s debut album for MCA Records, but it was ultimately released on Cargo Music[6]. Its follow-up “What It Is And How To Get It” was released on Buttertone Records in 2002[7], featuring an updated line-up of McKeag, Jason Staczek (keyboards), Mike Musburger (drums) and Phil Hurley (bass). Shuggie did limited touring and broke up in 2003, at which point McKeag started a band with Oliver Little, Brian Burnside and David Weeks called Black Panties. Black Panties played around Seattle, opened for X and the Black Keys, among others, and recorded a 9 song, unreleased demo with Kurt Bloch before breaking up in mid-2004.

In August of 2004, McKeag began playing with The Presidents of the United States of America in original guitbassist Dave Dederer's stead on the road, officially replacing him full-time in 2007, citing Dederer's desire to spend more time at home with his family as cause for leaving[8]. McKeag played with The Presidents and recorded two records with them until their soft retirement in 2015. During his years with PUSA, he also played on albums and tours with Kasey Anderson & the Honkies[9], did various one-off gigs in Seattle with his cover band 70 Proof, and continued his work as a talent buyer, event producer and production manager.

In 2014, McKeag relocated back to San Diego[10] and started playing with local blues outfit Lady Dottie & The Diamonds[11], joined Dirty Sweet, and started his own Andrew McKeag Band shortly thereafter.
