Early life

Angela Robinson Witherspoon was born in Washington, D.C., to Elbert Robinson, a lawyer, and Verna Robinson, a librarian. She moved to Europe at the age of twelve with her family. Her father was a diplomat under President Lyndon B. Johnson. Consequently, Robinson speaks fluent Dutch, French, and Italian. They returned to the United States when Richard Nixon was elected in 1970.

During her sophomore year of college in 1972, she worked at the National Portrait Gallery at the Smithsonian Institute and in the Art Department at the Washington Post. She attended Pratt University and majored in Fine Art and minored in Filmmaking. She moved to New York and worked as a model at the Ford Agency.

Acting career

Angela started her acting journey when she was cast in her first speaking role opposite Eddie Murphy in 48 Hrs. Angela has continued to work in film and television, and has appeared in Ugly Betty, Joan of Arcadia, Soul Plane, The Wayans Bros., 3rd Rock From The Sun, L.A. Law, The Meteor Man, and starred in The Moment After. She has most recently recurred on Criminal Minds as Cassie Campbell and on Season 3 and 4 of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend as the Judge.[1]

Directorial work

Angela began her directorial debut in 2013, with her first short film, Last Call, starring Erica Juliet. Her short documentary Betye Saar: the Alpha and Omega on Betye Saar, an artist known for her involvement in the Black Power movement, premiered at the San Diego Black Film Festival and was nominated for Best Cutting Edge Short. ​Angela wrote, starred and directed the short silent film Sunset & Neverland, which premiered at the Action On Film International Film Festival.

In 2015, Angela directed and produced Wish Me Luck starring Marie Victoria Ray and Kelly Tighe. A story about battling breast cancer and the power of friendship, the film was endorsed by

The Susan G. Komen Foundation. ​Angela's latest project is Curtsy, Mister, a full-length documentary based on the life story of Ronnie Grant, the first Men's Fashion Editor of Essence magazine.[2]

Angela is developing a television series, loosely based on her family called My Royal Family. Angela is also near completion on a full-length documentary on Betye Saar.

Personal Life

Angela married comedian John Witherspoon in 1986. They have two sons, John David Witherspoon, an actor and Youtuber, and Alexander Witherspoon (Trace Nova), a musician.
