A founding member and the leader of an opposition political party called League of Congolese Democrats (LIDEC) legally established by Ministerial Decree No 153/2010 on November 3rd, 2010, Angèle MAKOMBO N’Tumba is running for President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in the presidential election expected in December 2018. She is determined to use her broad experience in global diplomacy and international politics, as well as lessons learnt from around the world on democracy, human rights, good governance, the rule of law, including accountability of political leaders, government officials and other public institutions, to bring positive change to the Congo. She was the only female candidate in the presidential election in the DRC in 2011, but pulled out of the race in the hopes of uniting the opposition around a single candidate. An international civil servant with the United Nations for nearly 24 years, Ms. MAKOMBO decided to resign from the UN in February 2011, giving up a promising career and a comfortable life in New York, to go back home and serve her country. She held various positions while at the UN, dealing in particular with conflict prevention and resolution in Africa, as well as issues relating to institution building. She was a Senior Political Officer in charge of African issues in the Office of the UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. From March 2007 to her resignation from the United Nations in 2011 to run for President, Ms. MAKOMBO was a Senior Political Affairs Officer in the Department of Political Affairs. Before that, she worked as a Political Affairs Officer in the same Department, and held similar functions in the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations. She also held other positions, including Legal Officer in the UN Legal Office; Press Officer in the Department of Information. Legal Consultant with the United Nations Center on Transnational Corporations; Legal Consultant with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). Ms. MAKOMBO is currently a Senior Member of the DRC Economic and Social Council where she is serving in the Commission on Environment and Natural Resources. Native of Kabinda, Lomami Province in the DRC central region of Kasai, and the fifth child of a family of ten children, Ms. MAKOMBO was born in Kinshasa on December 1st, 1954. A widow and a mother, she was married for 25 years to Thomas Eboum, a sales engineer and former United Nations international civil servant. Ms. MAKOMBO made her first steps in life in Lukula/Mayombe, located in the DRC’s western province of Kongo Central, where her father was working at the time as a senior medical assistant in the 1950s. She attended elementary school in Lyon, France, where her family joined her father, who was studying medicine with a fellowship from the World Health Organization (WHO). The fellowship program was initiated by the country’s first Prime Minister, Patrice Emery Lumumba. She attended middle and high school at the Lycée du Sacré Coeur, Sainte Germaine Institute and Sainte Thérèse de Lisieux Institute in Kinshasa where she earned her high school diploma. Ms. MAKOMBO has a Master Law Degree from the University of Paris I- Panthéon Sorbonne. She also graduated from the Institute of Political Science of Paris (SciencesPo). In addition, she graduated from the Institute of Judiciary Studies of the University of Paris I- Panthéon Sorbonne. Ms. MAKOMBO also earned her admission certificate to the Professional Training Center for Attorneys of Paris (CFPA). She has written a number of articles on politics and socio-economic issues in the DRC. Ms. MAKOMBO was the Chairperson of a not-for-profit organization of Congolese women living in New York and the surrounding areas, which, for over fifteen years, provided financial and moral support to girls from low income families in the capital city of Kinshasa to allow them to go to school.
