释义 |
Animal husbandry or livestock farming refers to the rearing of such as cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, buffalo, and poultry. The main purpose of livestock farming is to provide basic meat products, milk, and dairy products. Some animals like donkeys and horses, are mostly used for transportation of agricultural products. Cattle rearing in the carribeanIn the Caribbean, cattle are reared on small farms by families for their own consumption, and for local sale to butchers. The animals reared on larger farms are for sale to the public. Cattle are reared for beef and dairy products. The main breeds are Charbrays, Charolais, Jamaica Reds, Sahival, Yorkshire, Holstein, Zebu, Brahma, and Jersey. Farms are divided into sections or paddocks that are fenced. The animals are corralled in one section at a time, to graze. This is called rotational grazing. Strip grazing is also practised. Under this method, the pastures are enclosed by electric fencing and sub-divided by similar fencing. Cattle are only allowed in restricted areas of pasture. On dairy farms, the basic types of pasture are para grass, elephant grass, which tolerates drought conditions, pangola grass, which is well known and widely cultivated, and tanner grass, which is used mainly as a good supplement for pangola grass during the dry season. It is used as fodder (cut grass that is fed to animals kept in stalls). Some beef cattle are kept in coconut fields. The animals graze under the palms and their droppings fertilize the ground. Some farms practice zero grazing. In this case the animals are kept inside and trough-fed entirely on local agricultural by-products such as sugar cane taps, rice bran, broken rice, citrus pulp, ground chicken guys and feathers. Sheep and goatsSheep are reared for their meat, which is called mutton. Black belly sheep are common in Barbados and they are exported to Caribbean territories such as Dominica, Trinidad, Grenada, Guyana and Jamaica. Many small landless farmers maintain small flocks on public or private pasture or along roadways. Sheep are able to thrive in areas with only poor-quality grass. The Blenheim Sheep Project in Tobago is a government enterprise aimed at producing high-quality breeds such as Black Belly and Hair Sheep. About 800 sheep are reared on this project. Goats are widely reared under conditions similar to those for sheep. Most of them are reared by small farmers on mixed farms. Poultry farmingPoultry farming is the rearing of chickens, ducks, geese and turkeys. Most are reared by householders for their own consumption, but some are reared to be sold locally. Therefore, poultry farming is undertaken on both a small and large scale. Poultry farming on a large scale A broiler farm consists of sheds in which baby chickens are placed, according to their age. The farms are equipped with modern machinery such as waterers, de-beaking machines, brooder lamps and screens, grading machines, sprayers and bulk-feed bins. Poultry farms dispose of waste matter by burning and burying it. Some of it is re-used as a crop fertilizer. |
