Not to be confused with animal sanctuary or wildlife sanctuary

Animal orphanage

Animal orphanages are facilities that take in abandoned juvenile animals with the goal of either rehabilitating the animals for eventual release into the wild or to serving as a sanctuary for the animal’s entire life.[1] Some animals are able to be rehabilitated and released back into the wild.[2] For animals to be released into the wild, they have to meet certain criteria such as demonstrating that they will be able to find food, interacting with other animals of their species, and avoiding predators and humans.[3] There may also be an assessment on the environment, determining if the newly released animal would be able to find adequate resources and survive.[4] Other animals are kept in sanctuaries if they do not have the skills to survive in the wild or if they do not have a habitat to return to.[5]

Animal orphans can be the result of abandonment by the parent[6], illegal wildlife trade and trafficking, habitat destruction [7], or poaching [8].

While the animals are staying at the orphanage, they should only interact with humans at a minimum.[9] They can also be taught to avoid humans and other natural predators so that the orphaned animal will be successful once it is released back into the wild.

When the animals are returned to the wild, they are assessed for overall health and tested to see if they have learned skills that will allow them to find food and interact with other species.[4]

The habitat in which the animal is being released into should also be assessed to determine if it has adequate food and other resources.[10]

Many animal orphanages also have programs in local communities to promote conservation. This can be done by building fences to reduce human-wildlife conflict, creating anti-poaching programs, and teaching children about the roles that wildlife play in the environment.[11]
