Focus

As an artist Anke Eckardt realizes installations based on sound including ultrasound and infrasound in interdependence with visual space and objects. Within her research she develops novel material and investigates the ambiguity of acoustic metamaterial. As professor for sound she teaches auditive culture against the background of aesthetic, cultural, technical and political conditions of physical and medial space which merge in the way how spatial situations are audiovisually perceived [https://books.google.de/books?hl=en&lr=&id=Tnj1d6_q9eAC&oi=fnd&pg=PR7&dq=sonic+experience&ots=IAXSHEe6oQ&sig=bu4Uq7JAl215S2ZQvuUBUeM6ZM4#v=onepage&q=sonic%20experience&f=false (cf. Sonic Experience)].

Adding to her educational background in audio engineering (completed training at the SAE in Berlin in 1998) Anke Eckardt received a Master of Arts in Sound Studies at the Berlin University of the Arts in 2010, where she studied with Sam Auinger, Holger Schulze and Sabine Sanio. 2011-2013 she received a stipend of the Einstein Foundation as a fellow of the Graduate School of the Arts and the Sciences at the University of the Arts Berlin, mentored by Christina Kubisch.

2012 her artist book SONIC SPACES was published by Revolver Publishing.[1]

In 2014 she became a research and artistic assistant at the Department of Visual Arts & Architecture within the School of Architecture, Urban Planning and Landscape Design at the University of Kassel[2]. There she founded the research and prototyping laboratory ‘SOUND lab’ which is shared by both students and academic staff for the exploration of sonic phenomena and their auditive perception. As part of the transdisciplinary platform BAU KUNST ERFINDEN[3], Eckardt is working on various collaborative projects as well as on her doctoral degree in the field of experimental material research with sound.

In 2017 Anke Eckardt was appointed Professor for Sound at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne[4]. In 2018, together with Prof. Dr. Lilian Haberer and Karin Lingnau, she initiated the transdisciplinary research project Materiathek – a material archive in the fringes of the arts.
