Anna Anvil was a Yup'ik master skin sewer from Nunapitchuk, Alaska. She was born on May 25, 1930 and passed away on March 6, 2013. [1] She was raised in the traditional way of the Yup'ik people, learning the art of skin sewing from her grandmother, Elena Cikigaq and her mother, Lucy Beaver. Anna used her fine sewing skills to create mittens, fur hats, dolls, kuspuks, slippers, dance fans, mukluks and parkas. She used to receive orders for her art from people all around the world. Her art as a skin sewer garnered Hollywood film industry's attention and she was commissioned work for the 1994 film "On Deadly Ground". The Bridge Builders of Anchorage honored her commitment to carry on tradition and pass along her wisdom to younger generations. Anna won numerous awards in the Bethel Winter Carnival in the early '60s and '70s, the Alaska State Fair in Palmer, and the Kenai Peninsula State fair. [2]

As a dedicated teacher of her art, Anna fearlessly shared her skills with other people: "Some women don't want to give away their patterns" she would say, "But I think that everyone should know, because our culture is going to fade." Laughing, she added, "I'm a 67-year-old woman, getting shorter and shorter, and I'm willing to teach." She often taught as part of the Alaska State Council on the Arts Artist and Apprentice Program.[3]
