Antipope is a Finnish heavy metal band that playes progressive extreme metal taking the main influences from black metal, death metal, and doom metal. The band fromed in Oulu, Finland, in 2004.

Band history

Antipope started in 2004 as a three-piece studio project. The original line-up consisted of Mikko Myllykangas (guitar, vocals), Santtu Heinilehto (bass) ja Jyri Palmu (drums), who had played together since the late 1990s in different underground progressive metal and black metal projects. In 2005, Juho Rikberg joined Antipope so that Mikko could focus solely on vocals while perfoming live. Since the beginning, the band focused on writing original material, and after few months of writing Antipope published the early demo recordings as very limited pressing of Scorched Heavens EP. Two years later, the published another unofficial compilation consisting of 15 first songs written for Antipope. Self-published Apostate Angell (2006) was limited to 20 copies. These early song were mostly inspired by the 1990s black metal, yet showing some hints of more progressive songwriting that has become a trade mark in Antipope's music since.

In 2007, Antipope played their first live show and continued performing live during the following years. In the spring of 2008, Antti J. Karjalainen joined the band as a second guitarist so that the band could present their more complicated compositions live. In the meantime, the band wrote material for their first official publication, Chaosmos EP. The publication of the EP was shadowed by the death of Jyri Palmu in June 2008. Palmu died from heart failure caused by a genetic heart condition. A few months after Palmu's death, Tuska E. joined Antipope as a drummer.

In 2009, Antipope released yet another EP, Excessive Use of Faith, first to feature Tuska E. as the drummer. Stylistically, the band moved further away from black metal and incorporated more death metal and progressive metal influences into their music. In 2010, Antipope published their debut studio album, a self-published Desert.

In 2011 Antipope published their second album House of Harlot through a Finnish label Violent Journey Records. The band began to incorporate stylistical influences from industrial metal and gothic metal to move further away from black and death metal origins. The album was published 111 years after the death of the English author Oscar Wilden. The title track of the album makes a references to a poem by Wilde, entitled "Harlot's House" .

The band began to work on their third studio album by early 2012. The album was ready for publication by the early next year, and 3 Eyes of Time was published in May 2013 by Violent Journey Records. During the album recordings, Antipope recorded also two cover songs, performing 'Kärleken Väntar' by the Swedish alternative rock band Kent, and 'Mr. Crowley' by Ozzy Osbourne. During the album production process, the bass guitarist Santtu Heinilehto left the band due to lack of motivation for band activities. Mikko Myllykangas handeled the bass players duties for the live shows supporting 3 Eyes of Time.

Between the years 2014–2016 the band took a break from recording and touring activities. By the late 2016, the long standing member of the band, Juho Rikberg left Antipope to pursue other musical goals. Around the same time, the remaining members of the band began to finalize what was to become the fourth album of Antipope. One year later, in 2017, the band published Denial/Survival, their first album to be published by international label, the Brazilian [https://hmrock.com.br/ Heavy Metal Rock]. Denial/Survival marked the return of Mikko to play guitar both in the studio and live. Also, musically the album began to re-introduce elements of black and death metal even though retaining the melodic aspect of Antipope's previous albums.

By the early 2019, the band announced that the fifth studio album is entering post-production and is planned for autumn 2019 release.
