Ariel Barnett (born 23 Jan. 1939) is an Israeli landscape architect. Alumnus of Kew College and University of Reading, United Kingdom. Working for over 50 years, 20 of which as the general secretary of the Israeli Association of Landscape Architects. Most of his works were for the public sector.

Biography

Born on the eve of World War II at Ramat Marpeh hospital, Ramat Gan, Israel.

Studied at Yahalom elementary school, Ramat Gan. At age 9, joined the "Young Maccabi" youth movement and later the local scout group of the Ramat Gan boy-scouts, in which he was very active as an instructor.

After graduating elementary school, Barnett applied to the Kanot agricultural high school, near Gedera, where he acquired expertise in seeding, ornamental plants and plantations.

Barnett was a exceptional athlete, exceling in athletics and basketball, and coordinated the sports activity at Kanot high school.

After graduating high school, Barnett joined the Nahal and served all across Israel. While doing so, Barnett began researching academic landscape architecture options, Kew College and University of Reading, as recommended by the Israeli Agriculture office.

Barnett's studies began at Kew College and University of Reading, in which the best landscape architects of England taught at the time.

On January 1965, Barnett won the Clalit HMO contract bid and began working as manager of the newly created Gardens Dept. He and his team built the Gardens Dept. from the ground up.

Meanwhile, Barnett began working on development plans for multiple HMO clinics and hospitals.

Barnett attended continuing education programs in city planning, roads and traffic, accessibility, drainage and irrigation.

Projects

Hundreds of Clalit HMO clinics.

Hospitals: Yosftal in Eilat, Soroka, Kaplan, Carmel, HaEmek, Meir, Gehah, Shalvata, Herzfeld and Schneider Children's Medical Center.

Rest homes: Kinrot, Shavey Zion, Mivtahim, Zichron, Beit Remez, Ashkelon, Tivon, Beit Yaari, Beit Nissan and others.

Barnett has worked with leading Israeli architects, including Jacob Rechter, Arie Sharon, Moshe Zarchi, Avraham Yasci, Rami Carmi and others. Some of these projects have won the Israel Prize.

Other works

Barnett was involved with the Kibbutz Movement, doing ecological design for dozens of Kibbutzes. While on unpaid leave, he worked for the Israel Nature and Parks Authority under Major Gen. (res.) Avraham Yafe.

Out of interest in Africa, Barnett designed the Xangola base in Uganda, under Idi Amin's regime.

Voluntary work

A major staple of Barnett's life was devoted to the Israeli Association of Landscape Architects. In 1984, Barnett volunteered to coordinate the association's activity as the general secretary, as requested by Lifa Yahalom, his predecessor.

Barnett addressed the position as his calling. He recreated the organization as a Nonprofit organization, renamed from Garden Architects Association to "The Israeli Association of Landscape Architects", which became the official representative body of the landscape architecture field in Israel.

He was instrumental in drafting regulations for the association and initiating professional courses and conventions.

Barnett was chosen by the association to represent Israel at the International Federation of Landscape Architects, IFLA, at multiple conventions worldwide.

Barnett served continuously as the association's general secretary until 2011. In addition, he aided in establishing the Horticultural and Landscape Association in Israel.

Awards

After graduating University of Reading, Barnett went through practical training at Kansas, Missouri, United States, after which he was awarded an honorary citizenship of Paola City, for the renovation of the Miaola park lake.

Barnett won the Clalit HMO CEO prize for designing and developing the Herzfeld hospital plot, with Avraham Yasci and Yaakov Gil.

Personal Life

Barnett is the fifth generation in Israel on his mother's side, Neomi Brown. His father, Robert Barnett, made Aliyah from England and worked for Anglo-Palestine Bank, which later became Bank Leumi.

In 1965, after returning from his studies abroad, Barnett married Molly Rotenberg, who made Aliyah from Canada. They had two daughters, Carmel and Shelly.

Barnett fought in the Six-Day War and the Yom Kippur War under the Israeli Combat Engineering Corps and the First Lebanon War as an education officer.

After the First Lebanon War, Barnett joined Sara, with whom he lives to this day, at village in the Sharon plain.

Barnett has four grandchildren, Daniel, Lauren, Roy and Leann. He enjoys gardening, planting, athletic activities and nature treks alongside his wife Sara and their two dogs.
