{{DISPLAYTITLE:Arlene Rush}}Arlene Rush (born 1955) is a New York City-based multidisciplinary artist. She was known in her early career for her abstract metal sculptures[1], and her practice soon evolved to incorporate more conceptual work tackling gender and identity. During the last couple of decades, she has notably developed a body of photographic work inspired by her personal life experiences (such as a bout with breast cancer), as well as an installation commemorating the fortieth anniversary of Ntozake Shange’s choreogram “for colored girls who have considered suicide when the rainbow is enuf.” [2][3] In recent years, her work has revolved around the process of “archiving” her 30-year career, transforming these objects and ideas into art; for example, fashioning her collection of rejection letters into sculptural installations.[4] The artist's current focus centers on issues around gender, identity, socioeconomic issues and politics, asking viewers to look at the balance and place and meaning of what is occurring in our contemporary world.[5]

Biography

Rush grew up in the Bronx and Queens, graduating from Queens College where she observed, “there were no women professors teaching sculpture in the art department, and sculpture was what I wanted to do.” [6] She began her art career in 1986, setting up a studio in the Chelsea district of Manhattan[7] where she welded and painted abstract steel sculptures in the tradition of Anthony Caro.[8] In 1991, Rush began practicing Buddhism, which led her to explore philosophical ideas in her artwork.[9] Since 2000, Rush, being a fraternal twin to her brother, has developed a series of works using photos covered with shattered glass, mining her personal history and growth as a woman and artist to comment on gender roles and societal norms.[10] In recent years, she has incorporated interactive elements into her artistic practice, such as with her political piece “Rush for President,” a satirical interactive installation underscoring some of the problematic aspects of the electoral process and how these pitfalls affect voters’ perspectives and faith in that system.[11] Furthermore, the multidisciplinary installations and interactive performances that constitute her series “Evidence of Being” (2014-present)[12] included a public call on social media soliciting rejection letters from fellow artists.[13][14] In addressing the effects of the art market, gentrification, class warfare, gender bias, and other kinds of discrimination, Rush questions what constitutes success and "the nature and importance of an artist's work, particularly in the face of rejection." [15]

Exhibitions and collections

Rush frequently contributes work to exhibitions and auctions benefiting gender, health-related, and social issues, participating in Visual AIDS "Post Cards from the Edge" for every year since its inception in 1998[16][17]; and A.I.R.
