Armene Modi (born 1947.[1]) is an educator and social activist who founded the organization Ashta No Kai in her hometown of Pune, India[2]

Early Life

Armene Modi was born in 194 in the city Pune in the state of Maharashtra in India[3]

Education

Modi holds a Bachelor's English Language and Literature at Nowrosjee Wadia College. Master's in International Relations at Tufts University and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages at Columbia University. Currently studying for her Doctorate at J.F.Oberlin University.[4]

Career

Early in her career, Modi taught English to different universities, Nihon University, in Japan and United States and India to undergraduates[4]. Between the time of her experience as an English educator to 1998(founding Ashta No Kai), she became involved improving the education in poor communities where women were illiterate due to their lack of education in poor and male privileged towns in India.

Ashta No Kai organization translates to a proverb in Japan "For a better tomorrow [5]" learned from Modi's time in Japan. According to Ashta No Kai website, they "aim to make a difference in rural women's lives by providing them with the education, vocational skills, and resources they need to become economically independent and self-reliant."[5]

Personal Life

Modi has 2 daughters Zareen Beck and Minoee Modi.[6]
