Burch is an American journalist, best known for being a 2017 Pulitzer Prize finalist, alongside fellow investigative reporter Carol Marbin Miller, in the Investigative Category for their “Fight Club: Dark Secrets of Florida Juvenile Justice” series.[1] “Fight Club” explored abuse in Florida’s juvenile justice system and prompted legislative reform to protect young charges.[2]

Burch is a recipient of numerous honors for her “Innocents Lost”[3] project, a series where her team investigated how the deaths of 500 children from abuse or neglect escaped Florida’s child welfare safety net. The prizes include the 2015 Worth Bingham Prize, the Associated Press Media Editors Association Public Service Award, the Selden Ring Award, the Goldsmith Prize for Investigative Reporting, and the Online News Association's Knight Award for Public Service.[4]

Her enterprise reporting ranges from the coverage of the prescription drug abuse epidemic in Florida to the Trayvon Martin and Casey Anthony murder cases to the challenges facing returning war veterans.[4]

Burch's work has been published in a number of newspapers including The New York Times, Seattle Times, Star Tribune, Miami Herald, Fort Worth Star-Telegram, The Boston Globe and Medium.[5]

Audra D.S. Burch was born in Newark, New Jersey. She graduated from Columbia High School (DeKalb County, Georgia), where she participated in English and yearbook courses that built a foundation for her journalism career.

Burch attended college at Florida A&M University where she graduated with a Bachelor's degree in journalism. Soon after graduating, launched her career at the Post-Tribune in Gary, Indiana followed by a stint at the Sun-Sentinel in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and her position as a consumer writer for the Miami Herald.[4]

She currently is a National Enterprise Correspondent for The New York Times[6], as well as a member of the National Association of Black Journalists.[4]
