HistoryThe Kingdom of Bhutan and the Republic of Austria established diplomatic relations on April 26, 1989. Bhutan is the only priority country of the Austrian Development Cooperation in Asia.[1] The state-approved Austrian Bhutan Society was founded on March 13, 1998 by Ulli Walter and Claus Walter. Since November 21st, 2018, Gunther Hölbl has been the Royal Honorary Consul General. OrganisationThe Austrian Bhutan Society is an organisation registered with both the Interior Ministry of Austria as well as with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bhutan. Since its foundation in 1998, the President has been Undersecretary DDr. Claus Walter, until his retirement head of the Support International Department at the Ministry of Education of Austria and president of the umbrella organisation of all Austrian-foreign societies (PaN) for 15 years.[2] Secretary General is Jacqueline Strobl, Erwin Kubesch acts as spokesman, honorary president is Christian Prosl.[3] The sister company in the Bhutanese capital of Thimphu is the Bhutan Austria Society with its president Langa Dorji. The Austrian Bhutan Society has been included in the United Nations database as a recognised NGO. Since then, it has been acting as liaison office to the OSCE, the United Nations Office and all other international organisations based in Vienna. ActivitiesOne of the central tasks of the bilateral association, according to the information provided on its own website, is the networking among Austrians interested in Bhutan and looking for information about the Land of the Thunder Dragon. The Society furthermore develops and manages projects in the international development sector in the partner country Bhutan. One such project is the primary school in Pangtokha in the eastern district of Trashiyangtse which was established by the Austrian Bhutan Society in 2005. Another focus is the provision of scholarships to enable Bhutanese students to study in Austria. In 2007, the Society initiated and named the Druk Yul Park in Vienna.[4] Druk Yul is the bhutanese name for Bhutan. Awards
